WEATHER FAILS TO BLUFF OUT AP PEARANCE OF LITTLE SYMPHONY
An inch and hall" of snow Satunhn delayed the
morning concert of I he N\ C. Lilt It- Symphony in
Franklin, but true to tradition tin- show went on.
The morning children's concert was rescheduled for
after lunch and the adult concert that night went
off without a hitch. Several thousand children
heard (picture above) the symphony' under the di-"
rection of Dr, Benjamin Swalin. About +50 turned
out for the night concert in the high school gym
nasium. Replacing tenor soloist Walter Carringer,
who had to return to New York when the orches
tra canceled earlier concerts in the western area
because oi' the weather, was Miss Sophia Steffan,
iin //<>' soprano ?'? i I ligh Point and New York. The
Viuest soloist he.yan her career with Grass Roots
< )]>era Coinpanv. in the role of Carmen. She studied
at-. Marines School, appeared with the Aspen Music
Festival., l yric 'Opera of Chicago, New Orleans
< >pera Association, Julliard Opera Theatre, New
York City Opera, and others. In 1959, Miss Steffan
won the Naumhur^ Foundation award, which gave
her a recital in Town Hall in New York City.

Fair Fund
Fares Badly,
$$$ Needed
Bad weather hasn't helped the
campaign to raise funds for an
exhibit hall, but the coming of
sprint? should see the picture
brighten, according to Cecil
Parker, president of the Macon
County Fair Association.
To date. $263 in cash and
pledges has been received by the
treasurer. Mrs. Grace Tatham.
Tile donations for the hall range
from a dollar to a hundred.
Persons planning to donate to
the building fund are requested to
do it immediately so construction
can begin as ?soon as the weather
permits. The association earlier
said it hoped to have enough on
hand by the 29th of this month to
begin the project. Plans call for
a 132 by 48 foot block hall.
If the money for the main ex
hibit hall is raised by the public,
an anonymous citizen has prom
ised t ^ erect a cattle barn on the
fair grounds.
