Miss Jewel Frances Guest and
Hugh Jerry Barber were united
in marriage Saturday, March 5, in
a candlelight service held in the
chapel of the Temple Baptist
Church in Detroit, Mich.
The Rev. Stan Cruse officiated
using the double-ring ceremony.
A program of wedding music was
presented by Mrs. Violet Opper
thouser.
The bride is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Samuel H. (Jack! Guest,
of Detroit, Mich., former residents
of Franklin. She is the grand
daughter of Harley Baldwin, of
I^anklin.
The bridegroom is the son of
Mr. and Mrs! Edd Barber, of De
troit.
The bride, who was given in
marriage by her father, chose a
white lace ballerina-length dress
for her wedding. It was styled
along princess lines with long
sleeves and scalloped neckline
dotted with tiny pearls. An orange
blossom crown held her fingertip
veil in place and she carried a
bouquet of white roses.
Miss Mary Fairbanks served as
maid of honor and bridesmaids
were Misses Patricia Guest, Trisha
Evansoon, Linda Baldwin, and
Betty Ann Guest, all cousins of
the bride. They wore dresses of
blue chiffon styled with ballerina
length skirts, short sleeves, and
scoop necklines. Blue flowered
hats and arrangements of . pink
carnations completed the cos
tumes. Little Bonnie Shaw Avas
flower girl and wore a dress of
pink lace.
Ronnie Jodway served as best
man and ushers were Don Fletch
er, Tom Kenny, Jim Poe, and Tom
Perry.
The mother of the bride wore a
dress of blue chiffon with match
ing accessories and a Corsage of
white orchids.
The bridegrooms mother wore
a beige chiffon dress with orange
accessories and a corsage of
orange roses.
Following the ceremony the
bride and groom greeted '-"uests
at a reception held at the home
of the bridegroom's parents.
On their return from a honey
moon to Alabama Mr. and Mrs.
Barber will make their home in
Detroit where Mr. Barber is as
sistant pro at the Plum Hollow
Golf Club.

Brought Out In Survey
A report entitled "Forest Facts
for Western North Carolina", pre
pared by the Ashe vi Lie Agricul
tural Development Council, pre
sents a thumbnail sketch of Ma
con County's forests and the pro
cessing. of forest products.
Here are some statistics pointed
up in the report:
Total county acreage is 333.000.
of which 62,000 acres are non
forest; 6.000 forest non-commer
cial; 265.000 forest commercial;
141,000 public: 124,000 private;
71.000 farm; and 53.000 non-farm.
New board feet of sawtimber is
543,000,000. with 70,000,00 in soft
woods and 473,000,000 in hard
woods.

or plant totaled 4,297.000 board
feet for a value of $214,850; pulp
wood, 20,217 coords, at a value of
$293,146. In the same year. 80.800
pieces of wood were cut as fence
posts for a value of $17,340. The
county's total value of wood pro
ducts harvested was $525,336.
The manufacturing employment
picture in '58 saw 27 sawmills and
16 other i furniture, fenceposts
etq.) operations going, employing
a total of 189 workers. In nou
munufacturing employment were
109 in logging, 101 in pulpwood
production, and 16 in other opera
tions, for a total of 226. Twenty
nine trucks were used in lumber
ing. 24 in pulpwood. and 16 in
other operations, for a total of
69 vehicles.
The report is the result of an
extensive survey by the Forestry
Commission of the Agricultural
Council on economic factors re
lated to forestry in each of the
23 western counties. The study
was made under the direction o
R. A. Campbell, leader. Ashevllle
Research Center. U. S. Forest
Service, and R. A. Vogenbergei .

of the Forestry Commission
"Forests are basic to the pro
gress and econohnc well-being of
all Western North Carolina coun
ties", the report points out.
Convincing proof is offered of
this statement.
In the 23 county area, forests
occupy. 75 per cent of the total
land area. This ranges from 44
per cent In Alleghany county to
over 90 per cent In Swain" and
Transylvania counties. Average
for the state as a whole is .60
per cent.
The over 18 thousand workers
employed by the forest and wood
using industries in the area com
prise one-third of the Industrial !
employees of the area, or approxi
mately the same number as are
employed In the textile industries.
The combined annual payroll
of the industrial and non-industri
al workers in the 23 county area
who depend directly upon the
forests and the wood-using in
dustries for employment totals an
estimated $82,370,000.
National farm income dropped
about IB per cent in 1959.
