Gardener A new sweet potato variety, Nugget, has just been named and released for seed increase in 1960 Seed stock will be produced this year under the supervision of the North Carolina Foundation Seed Producers, Inc. The variety was bred and selected through the co ordinated efforts of staff members in the Departments of Horticul ture and Plant Pathology of the N. C. Agricultural Experiment Station. Nugget, tested under the breed ing code number N.C. 171, has a number of qualities which are superior to Porto Rico and other varieties commonly grown in North Carolina. Chief among these is resistance to internal cork and fusarium wilt, two troublesome diseases .which have been of real concern to growers of "yams" in I the South. The roots of Nugget have a good j copper skin color and the flesh j is a uniform orange color at>::ul ' intermediate between Porto Rico j and Gold Rush. When grown in good sweet potato (sandy ? soil, the roots are very uniform and nicely tape ret at both ends. This variety sizes up more rapidly "than Porto .Rico and may be harvested a week to 10 days earlier. Yield comparisons are signifi- 1 cant; Over a four-year period, using 12 testing locations. Nugget ?produced 522 bushels per acre as compared to 3S9 bushels for Porta . Rico. Broken down into top grades, Nugget gave 250 bushels of No. 1 and 159 bushels of No. potatoes while Porto Rico gave 201 and 123. In baking tests, the quality of Nugget was judged to be quite acceptable. It has been particular ly outstanding in canning and freezing tests because of freedom from discoloration. This character istic gives the finished product matching pink nylon. She carried a bouquet o{ pink feathered car nations and lilies of the valley with pir.k and white streamers. Tir e bridesmaid was Miss Anita Owen, sister of the bride, whose costume was identical to that of the matron of ho?or. Joseph B. Owen, brother of the bride, served as best man and ushers were James E. Montgom ery, Richard Wilson and Harold Flowers. The bride's mother wore a dress of blue lace over taffeta with beige accessories and a beiije orchid corsage. Immediately following the cere mony, a reception 'was held in the basement of the church. The table, which was overlaid with :i cloth cf white net over pink, held a three-tiered wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and groom and a centerpiece of pink snap [dragons and wh te carnations.
