Your Social Security
A frequent" inquiry made to this
column is one concerning persons
working on jobs not covered by
Social Security. These persons are
working for non-profit organiza
tions and wish to avail themselves
of the protection of the Social
Security Law for themselves and
families.
A list containing the signatures,
addresses, and Social Security
numbers of the employes electing
to be covered by Social Security
must accompany the certificate.
The orgahlzation determines when
Social Security coverage will be
gin. There are several alternatives
? coverage may begin with the
first day of the quarter in which
the list is filed, or on the first
day of the quarter immediately
after the list is filed, or coverage
may be retroactive for four quar
ters. Whichever quarter Is chosen,
the organtetton and its employes
are subject to Social Security
taxes from that point.
Once the organization has
elected coverage, it must remain
In effect for at least 10 years.
Thus, the employes are certain
of obtaining 40 quarters of cover
age, a fully insured status under
Social Security.
More detailed information on
this provision of the Social Secur
ity Act may be had by writing to

ity Administration, 40 North
