News In The Making By BOB S. SLOAN Reflections on meeting the Democratic Presidential Nominee Last Tuesday in Washington. I heard Senator Sam Irwin, North Carolina's senior senator, give the following reasons as to why he would vote for and support John F. Kennedy for President of the United States. He cited the following, based he said, on his knowledge of the man from work ing with him in committees in the Senate and in sponsoring legislation together. Senator Irwin described Sen Kennedy as one possessed with the finest mind and keenest in tellect of anyone he had ever j known. He then described the presi dential aspirant as being one who was completely honest both with himself and those he dealt with. Kennedy's, loyalty to the Demo cratic party which went back sev eral generations in his family was Senator Irwin's third reason for 1 support. Hard working and industrious j and his personal courage, as ex emplified by his heroic conduct in World War II. were the final two reasons given by North Carolina's senior senator. The introduction was made at a luncheon given in Washington by Senator Kennedy for repre sentatives from North Carolina press, TV, and radio organizations. It was good, but not complete. In addition to Senator Kennedy, vice-presidential candidate Lyndon B. Johnson and Democratic na tional chairman Harry Jackson were there. In the address and question and I answer period which followed, the I keen mind which Senator Irwin had mentioned was very much in evidence. His answers were quick, forthright, and factual. However, it was after the speak ing was over when Sen. Kennedy was moving about the room con versing with one and all. Here he | seemed very much the introvert, i quiet, well-mannered, courteous, \ but friendly. Time and time again through the period of more than one hour of socializing, as I watched this man who may be our next Presl- 1 dent, the thought came to my mind, "Well, here is a real south ern gentleman of the old school ? with a Harvard accent." Keeping Chicks Healthy, Growing Is Vital Task Keeping chicks healthy and growing 16 a vital task in order to have top performing pullets in the laying house. "One thing that chicks will very likely encounter during the grow ing period is coccidiosis," says T. B. Morris, extension poultry specialist at N.C. State College. A study at the college showed the time that chicks are more likely to have trouble with coccidi osis is between the fourth and twelfth weeks of age. Poultry raisers should- pay special at- j tention to their chicks during this j age period. Coccidiosis can affect not only the vitality and livability of the chicks but also the production ability of the pullets during the laying year. Treatment should be started as soon as possible after chicks are known to have coccidi osis. A daily check on the chioks can pay dividends, in that mortality can be prevented and the chicks can be kept healthy. THESE HAVE TO GO!
