SANFORP IS SPEAKER ? Economic Survey Of Area By Commission Predicted Western North Carolina Region al Planning Commission held its quarterly meeting at the Jarrett House in Dillsboro Wednesday. August 24, with more than 100 leading citizens from the 11-county area present. The secretary-treasurer, George M. He also said that statements of dues were now being sent out to mem bers for the new fiscal year. Mr. Stephens also reported, as chairman of the committee to look into the financing of a proposed economic study of the entire region, that six of the leading in dustrial firms of the area had expressed interest and that the committee was optimistic in the prospects of arranging the fi nancing for the survey and felt that the actual survey would be under way before the ntxt quarter ly meeting. The study is designed to give local governments, manu facturing fiims, transportation and utility corporations, some in sight into the region's economic potential and point up, some of the deficiencies of which the legion is unaware. John R. Hampton, the commis sion's planning director, in fur ther commenting en the proposed economic survey, stated that with such a survey we will have som - thing to "form a firm basis for the further physical development of the region ". H. Bueck, of Franklm, then in troduced Democratic gubernatori al nominee Terry Sanford, a suest of the commission, who addressee' the meeting. In Mr. Sanford's ad dress he said that Western North Carolina is the state's, last great economic frontier and predicted a glowing future for it. He further said "It is going to grow and come into its own and I am glad you have the wisdom to see that it grows in an orderly way". He commented, "I am impress ed.
