I "red Hannah inspects tree project1. HAS TREE PROJECT ? Hannah Believes In Conservation By Mrs. Mildred Williamson ? A.S.C. Office Manager) Fred L. Hannah, of the Patton community, is a firm believer in conservation farming. Mr. Hannah believes that we are stewards of the soil, and are bound to take every conservation measure possible to protect it from erosion. He has carried out a number of conservation practices on his farm, but his foremost interest is a tree planting project that he undertook in 1953. Some badly eroded pasture land on the Hannah farm had suffered from a lack of proper conservation for a number of years. Mr. Han nah decided to sow kudzu to try to correct the erosion. When he failed to get a stand of kudzu grass, he adopted the suggestion ot planting white pine tree seedlings, available from the state nursery at a cost of $5.75 | per thousand. By following a long range farm plan, and with the help of J. Fred 1 Bryson, county forest ranger. Mr. Bryson recommended that he set the trees eight by eight, planting 670 trees per acre. Mr. Hannah visited the A. S. C. office here, which administers the A.C.P. program, and requested govern ment cost share assistance On the seedlings. He found that A.C.P. would pay $12 per acre toward the cost of the trees and labor on the job. He also requested some assistance in sowing grass on these acres and maintaining it with fertilizer, lime and other practices. Under this program he only received aid en a few acres each year and over a period of time was able to complete setting the whole area. To kill off the undesirable trees J on this land, Mr. Hannah used a solution of 2-4-D and 345 T, in j jecting the liquid into the base of 'the trees by "vaccination.". The 2-4-D kills the trees, be | ginning at the top and the 345 T I kills the trees at the root. He ex ! plained that he could market these undesirable trees to pay for ! the cost of the chemicals. He had 1 high praise for this 'method of ?successfully getting rid of unde sirable trees. Today the project is beginning to pay off. The older trees grow as much as four feet each year. Mr. Hannah says he can't count in dollars and cents the pleasure he finds in walking among the trees ranging from onr to seven i years old. As soon as the seedlings arc large enough to be classed as pulp wood, they are thinned out and these are sold at a profit. State Forest Service officials have told Mr. Hannah that every hour he spends working in these trees means $12 to him. He is con vinced of this and says that every briar or vine that wraps itself around a seedling makes the dif ference in a straight log and a crooked log and its market value Mr. Hannah is the first to ad mit that he could not have pos sibly accomplished this program without the assistance he received from the A.C.P. plan. He says he has participated in the program since its beginning and has not yet reached the point where he doesn't need the wide variety of practices available each year through the cost-share program. Directory Lists State's Leaders More than 100 leaders of North Carolina's third largest industry ? travel ? are listed in the 1960 Committee Directory just issued by the Travel Council of North Carolina. The listing, including represent atives of major manufacturing in dustries, public utilities, banks and other businesses not usually identi fied with the travel industry is indicative, said President Lynn Nisbet, of how completely the travel industry is now "everybody's business". More than 16,000 businesses that serve travel primarily are represented on the Council through the membership of their trade associations or by individ uals. These include the hotel, motel and restaurant associations. The first comprehensive survey of- the travel industry in North Carolina was sponsored by the Council last year, and it produced the eye-opening total of $360 mil lion dollars expenditures by travelers during 1958. Combined with the business also done with home-folks, the survey showed that the total volume of business of the travel-serving industry was $723 millions. This placed it In dollar volume only after the tex tile and tobacco industries, which in North Carolina lead the entire nation. A new survey is now being com pleted by the Council and will be made public at its autumn mem bership meeting in Southern Pines, October 23-24. A copy of the 1960 Directory, which also includes information about the Council, and a copy of the latest travel survey may be obtained free of charge from J. T. Outlaw. Secretary-Treasurer.
