Facts,Figures and Farmers MARION W. WALL, County Agent Temporary Change For the next few months office days will be Saturdays and first Mondays in Carthage and headquarters will be at Pinehurst. We find this absolute ly necessary in order to put over cer tain work, which will be essential in the County. W. A. Clark Believes in Pure Bred Poultry The other day Mr. W. A. Clark of Jackson Springs, was a caller in the office and gave this report: “One day last fall I took a load of chickens over to Pinehurst and in this load I had 18 that were just the or dinary run of stock on the farm. These brought me 35c per pound and in the same lot I had ten high grade Buff Orpingtons and sold these at the same time; they brought 40c per pound. This was a difference of sever al dollars in just one little shipment of chickens and I realized $53.41 from the lot.” This is an excellent example of what a standard breed of poultry will do. This is evidence enough that it will pay us all to cull the flock and raise the better breed of poultry. Efficiency A few weeks ago I was called to Mr. Alex McPherson’s farm near Cameron. Mr. McPherson was anx ious to build a few terraces before he set his tobacco. At eleven o’clock we “set up” and laid out 500 feet of terraces and one hour later we had 250 feet of these terraces built. It took a farm level, the County Agent, and Mr. McPherson to lay out the work and it took a two-horse plow, two mules and a farm hand to throw up the terrace, and took a Martin Ditcher, three mules and two farm hands to finish the job. This only goes to show how mXich time can be saved and the work completed in a short time by having the right kind of implements and the idea to do a thing right. Ten Thousand Dollars Offered The Chicago Board of Trade is of fering ten thousand dollars in premi ums for the grain and hay show which will be held in Chicago on November 26th; we are wondering if there are any farmers in Moore County who would like to send them an exhibit? Remember what Charlie Picquet says, “There is nothing too big to undertake if you go at it right.” Some citizens say they can tell how their garden is progressing by watch ing their neighbor’s chickens fatten ing up. LET’S SURPRISE THEM We are in shape to make some of your friends, and former residents of Vass happy, if you want to co-oper- ate with us a little. Every week we have a few copies of The Pilot left over. Away off in some far section of the country you have an acquaint ance who would be glad to get one of them. To them it would be just like a long letter from home. You have their address, and we have the paper, so let’s get together and give them a little treat. You hand us the names and addresses of your friends in other states, or in other sections of this state—those who formerly lived in this community—and we will mail them an occasional sample copy. We will pay the postage. All we ask of you is to furnish us the addresses, one or a dozen or more. It will take but a moment of your time to do this, and if you ever longed for a copy of your old home paper—and then got it—you already understand just how your friends will feel. Bring' us or mail us the names at once, and if they are not already on our list we’ll see that they get a few copies of the pa per from their old home town. H. R. I H R I E Lawyer CARTHGE, - N. C.
