UPPER HOKE ITEMS
The Mt. Pleasant school opened for
the 1922-23 term, Monday, with Miss
Morgan, of Raleigh, and Miss Bertha
Cameron, of Vass, as teachers. The
attendance for the first day was fairly
good.
The farmers are getting on fairly
well with cotton picking; some are
gathering corn. There is quite a bit
of tobacco to be graded yet. It seems
that the farmers who joined the co
operative association are a little slow
in marketing their tobacco. No doubt
this is caused by the small advance
they receive on their grades. We
think after they begin to get the
next advance and understand the situ
ation more fully that they will be
better pleased with the system of
marketing.
There will be a fairly good atten
dance at the Vass Fair from Upper
Hoke, Thursday, the weather permit
ting, and several exhibits will be car
ried by the Hokeites.
Among the latest happenings of
the community was the marriage on
Sunday of Mr. Dan R. Smith to
Miss Mamie Page, of Vass Route 2.
And we understand that others are
to be solemnized soon.
We understand that Mr. E. G.
Bal^r of Route 2 has sold his large
timber interests to a milling company
from near Sanford. It is also re
ported that Mr. C. H. Morris anti
cipates going in the mill business
in the near future.
Mr. p. E. Smith and family of
Mississippi, who visited Mr. Smith’s
mother, Mrs. H. A. Smith of route2
couple of weeks, returned to
their home last week.
. The Lobelia school is progressing
nicely under the management of Miss
Margie Campbell of Raeford; as
teacher, Mr. D. W. McFadyen has his
hands full with the school teachers of
Mt. Pleasant and Lobelia—as usual
Wat is quite a sport with teachers,
anyway.
It seems that our good road move
ment is on a drag. Why don’t we
get busy and get our road started
from Vass to Overhills; no better
development could take place for the
general public and no section needs
a road worse. So let’s all get to
gether and start the ball to rolling.
Who will give it the first shove
ahead ?
