Martin McFayden, of Fayetteville, spent Sunday with home folks in Cameron. Honoring the Cameron school teachers, Miss Annie Pierce enter tained at a pleasant social last week at her home, Borderlee. How many will respond R. S. V. P. to the Hon. Charles W. Tillet’s eightieth birthday party? By the time that rolls around the “Char leston” and “Black Bottom” will be a back number. However, the “Vir ginia Reel” being a classic, will still be in vogue for refined dancers. Miss Beulah Thomas, who teaches at Broadway, spent the week-end at home. Mrs. J. R. Loving, of Sanford,, spent the w'eek-end with Mrs. Laura Rogers. As to the statue of Virginia Dare being a work of art, or an atrocity, as to the statue in itself, it may be a wonderful work of art by a mas ter hand. But to the conception of North Carolina people, it is an atrocity. North Carolina’s conception of Virginia Dare is a ccharming and demure little maiden. But it is said Miss Lauder’s gift is a memorial and not intended even as an imagin ary likeness. Then why not a tab let or marker of some kind? North Carolina folk like originality. IVlatthews at 7:30 next Tuesday evening. Miss Eoline McMillan and Mrs. John Lancaster were guests of mem bers of the school faculty at lunch Tuesday. Rev. E. McWhorter, of Wilson, stopped in town a short while Fri day afternoon to greet his friends. Mr. McWhorter was returning from a business trip to Aberdeen. Little Miss Rena Grace Hale, of Rocky Mount, is the guest of her aunt, Mrs. D. A. Smith. Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Moffitt and Mr. and Mrs. B W Smith, of San ford, visited at the home of J. R. Thomas and W. J. Cameron Sunday afternoon. A large number of patrons and friends of the Vass-Lakeview school accepted the music department’s in- vitaion to attend its first recital for the year, which was held last Friday evening, and they had the privilege of listening to a most interesting program. Each member of the class showed evidence of the most careful training. Of especial interest were the numbers by the tiny tots. Twenty-six girls and four boys took part in the program. Parrish, of the Poultry Extension Forces, who spoke at the Farm Life School. J. M. Tyson attended court in Carthage the first of the wetk. Inter-Society Literary Contest to be held Friday evening. Hesperian and Acameron Literary societies will compete for honors. On Friday evening, Dec. 17, begin ning at seven-thirty o’clock on inter society literary contest will be held in the Vass-Lakeview school audi torium. This will be followed by a short comedy. Features— Readings— Acameron—Mildred Gunter. Hesperian—Elizabeth Byrd Chape- Declamations— Acameron—Joseph Matthews. Hesperian—Albert Graham. Debate— Resolved: That boys and girls who live in the country have as good chance at success as those who live in the city. Affirmative—Acameron — Evelyn Garner, Wesley Thompson, Willie Pearl Alexander. Negative—Hesperian—Mack Par sons, Redga Oldham. Colors — Acameron — Purple and gold. Hesperian—Red and White. The public is cordially invited to attend this program. After the contest, a short comedy will be presented, for which tickets will be sold a ten cents each. The proceeds will be used on the piano fund. This is an entertainment which no one can afford to miss, a dollar’s worth of fun for just ten cents. An all-star cast will be pres ent to show you how to laugh. Be sure to buy a ticket as soon as the de bate is over. At the close of the comedy the de cision of the judges will be announc ed. The judges are to decide, not on the individual winner, but on the society making the highest number of points as a whole. At this time the prize offered by the Woman’s Club to the grade sell ing the greatest number of Red Cross Christmas seals will be presented. Members of the commercial class of Farm Life school presented the comedy-drama, “The Eyes of Love,” in a very pleasing manner in the Vass-Lakeview school auditorium on Wednesday evening.
