Mrs. W. C. Eieslie, Mrs, H. A. Borst and Robert Leslie spent Tues day afternoon in Sanford Miss Glennie Keith, of Raleigh, will arrive In town Friday for the hol idays. G. W. Griffin, of Hamlet, spent Sunday with his family. W. H. Keith attended a Chevrolet dealers’ luncheon in Fayetteville Monday night. J. Elvey Thomas, of Raleigh, visit ed his parents Sunday. Earl Edwararf, who is a student at Mount Pleasant Institute, arrived Saturday to spend the holidays with his parents. Royce Byrd drove to Mount Pleasant Friday to bring Earl home. Miss Eloise Brooks has returned . from Mars Hill College to spend Christmas with her mother, Mrs. George Brooks. Miss Jessie Brooks is expected to arrive on Thursday . from Spring Hope, where she is a member of the school faculty. Ed Weber, of New York, will be the holiday guest of his sisters, Mrs. O. Winkelman and Mrs. E. Dunk- horst. Mrs. D. A. Smith has gone to her home in Mantjo to spend some time. She received a mesaga that her fath er had undergone an apendicitis ope ration in a hospital in Norfolk, and she will stay at home with her young er sisters while her mother is at the bedside of Mr. Westcott. D. A. Smith, Miss Agnes Smith and Miss Annie McGill went with Mrs. Smith as far as Raleigh Tuesday. Quite a number of Vass people went to Southern Pines Monday eve ning to attend a Chrsitmas panto mime, “Why the Chimes Rang,” giv en imder the auspices of the Eman uel Episcopal Church. The entire pro gram was good, and the Christmas music was especially beautiful. Horton Keith has returned from Buie’s Creek to spend the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Mrs. Bertie Matthews, Mrs. George Brooks and Mrs. G. W. Griffin were shopping in Sanford Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Griffin have returned from a short stay in An drews, S. C. Miss Annie McGill, who teaches in Ridge Springs, S. C., has arrived to spend the holidays with her mother, Mrs. D. C. McGill. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Graham spent a day last week ^ Raleigh. Dr. M. L. Matthews, of Sanford, visited his brother, Prof. W. D. Mat thews, Tuesday evening. Miss Mildred Thomas spent the week-end in Cornelius with hej- sis ter, Mrs Carl Cashion. Mrs. Cashion and her little duaghter, Dorothy By num, accompanied Miss Thomas home to spend the holidays. Guy H. Simpson, Jr., of Greens boro, will arrive Friday to spend Christmas with his parents. Miss Jewell Edwards, who teaches in Lucama, is spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Edwards. Miss Eoline McMillan was in Fay etteville shopping Monday. Miss Pearl Cobb has returned to Hotel Vass form a visit to Roxboro. Ben H. Wood, bookkeeper for The Little River Stores, will spend Christ mas with his parents in Newton. N. M. Smith, of Warsaw, is at home for the holidays. Mrs. J. A. Keith, Mrs. R. L. Old ham, Mrs. G. W. Griffin and Leon Keith accompanied Mrs. W. C. Byrd, of Pinehurst, to Sanford one day re cently. T. C. Gaddy, Miss Lula Gaddy and Mrs. T. C. Ellerbe, of Cameron, vis ited Mrs. A. K Thompson Sunday. The many friends of Mrs. Lizzie Thompson will be glad to learn that she has recovered from her recent ill ness sufficiently to return from Mt. Gilead to her with Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Thompson, on Cameron Route 1. Hesperian Society Wins in Contest. Quite an enthusiastic crowd as sembled in the school auditorium on last Friday evening for the inter society literary contest. The stage was attractively decorated with the purple and gold of the Acameron so ciety and the red and white of the Hesperian. Prof. W. D. Matthews, superintendent of the school, presid ed. The Acameron society was rep resented by Mildred Gunter, Joseph j Matthews, Evelyn Gardner, Wesley ! Thompson and Willie Pearl Alexan der, and the Hesperian by Elizabeth Byrd Chappell, Albert Graham, Mack Parsons, Redga Thomas and Lillian Oldham. Each society did good work, but the judges decided that the Hes perian representatives as a whole Viiv. A. ■ 4lirf>y were declared the winners in the con test. At the close of the society program, j a picture was presented to the sixth grade for having sold a greater num ber of Red Cross Christmas seals than any other grade. Almost the entire crowd bought tickets for the comedy which was pre sented for the benefit of the piano fund, and everyone received his dime’s worth of laughs. Professor Matthews acted the role of spieler ,and present ed a number of “freaks.” Ben Wood, as the most beautiful woman in the world; Robert Laubscher, the Chinese giant; Selma Smith and Josephine Vick as the two-headed girl, and Rev. Dougald Monroe and Merwyn Cox as the fat lady and her husband were well worth the price. An attractive little pantomime, a song by the sixth graders and a Christmas tableau com pleted the program. Marston and W. R. Wilson motored to Sanford three times on business the past week. J. W. McMurray and wife, of South Portland, Maine, were week end visitors of C. W. Marston, while en route to Sarasota, Florida, where they have a winter home. Miss Thelma Taylor and Mrs. Ficda Weymouth, of Farmington, Maine, spent a few days visiting friends in our village the past week, while en route by auto to Florida points. Miss Taylor is a ^chool teacher and was taking note^s all along. They were away four months on a vacation and plan to travel the entire time taking in views flrofn north to the south. Their social and pleasant manner made many friends for them while in and about our vil lage. A new pump has been ordered for our water supply in the village and we hope will be in operation within a week. 1 The Greek runner who did the Marathon in 490 B.
