H., we have received word of the good work being" carried on by Dr. W. F. Nobles of, Littleton and Nobles, Fla. Dr. Nobles usually breaks his journeys with a stay at the Southern Pines Hotel and since his re turn home this spring has been talk- I ing Southern Pines as the up-and- I coming resort of the South. Mrs. R. L. Hart and Mrs. C. P. Everest spent the week-end enjoying the sea breezes at Myrtle Beach. Ashe was moved to the Moore County Hospital Sunday to rest and recuperate while Mr. Ashe attends to the removal of their household goods to their new home in Charlotte. Mr, and Mrs. R. F. Potts left for New York City Saturday to remain for a few weeks. A note in the Pittsburgh papers of Friday announces the departure of Miss Gretchen Schoonmaker of Se- wickley for Stamford, Conn., to show seven of her horses in the great sum mer event of that town. Misfe Schoon maker will be remembered as one of the popular members of the equestrian colony of Weymouth Heights. Police Chief Beasley returned from his vacation just about in time to re ceive a call from an annoyed neigh bor in the vicinity of Pennsylvania avenue and May street Friday even ing, and hastening to the scene found a small riot being staged in the Barkmer house by temporary tenants from South Carolina. He separated the combatants' and restored order, and the matter was ended the next day by the imposition of costs by Justice Windham. Miss Louise McBride is visiting Mrs. Evelyn Tillman in her Bennett street home. from Buffalo where she has been spending the past three weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Wade Stevick. and children will leave this week for Elyria, Ohio, to visit Mr. Stevick’’s mother for two weeks. James Silver has returned from Tennessee. Harry Killpatrick of Peoria, 111., was a week-end visitor in town, en- route to Greenville, N. C. Mi-s. Clifton Currin left recently for Worcester, Mass., to 'spend a few weeks with relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Shaw of Hender son were visitors in town Tuesday. Among the picnics held on Wednes day was one given by the Catholic Church at Johnson’s Lake. The East ern Stars and their families met at Mrs. Florence Beck’s home on May street in the afternoon with the pic nic baskets at which their families and friends were invited. George Neidich of Edgewater Park, N. Y., and Edward Riggs of Florence, S. C., will be week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Beverley W. Linderman. Miss Elaine Fisher will leave Frf^ day for Blowing Rock to be the guest of Miss Polly Hayes for the month of August. FALLS OFF RAFT, DROWNS IN NEW WATSON LAKE n NOW IN CHARGE H Telephone 6441 Southern Pines William E. Freeman, colored, 29 years old, of Jackson Hamlet, the colored settlement near Pin^hurst, was drowned in the new Watson Lake between Southern Pines and Pinehurst luesday morning. He was engaged with other hands in towing out a raft toward the center of the lake when in f^ome manner he fell overboard. Though there were many aroun.d who witnessed the accident, none was able to swim, and Freeman drowned be fore their eyes without any attempt being made to save him, it is said. One witness stated that the men had been pushing and shoving each other and having a general good time just prior to the mishap. The body was recovered shortly af ter the accident, being located by Ad dison Rountree, who dove from the raft in search of Freeman, and was hauled to the surface with grappling irons. Although he had been in the water over an hour before the body v/as Recovered, Freeman was rushed to the Moore County |Iospital and worked over for some time, but with out avail. This is the first accident to happen at the new Watson develop ment since work begun there over a year ago. n S H ST. ANTHONY S. S. Miss Lenora Riggan left Monday for Wrightsville Beach where she will attend a house party with members of her sorority. Miss Emilie Richardson left Tues day for Cayuga, N. Y., where she will remain until the latter part of Au gust with friends. Miss Katharine Fleming, who has been the guest of Mrs. Maurice Jar- ratt, has returned to her home in P^aleigh. Mr. and Mrs. A. S. Ruggles are spending this week in Raleigh with their son, Edward Ruggles. Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Morris and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lewis left last Thurs day on a motor trip to Blowing Rock and Roaring Gap. While there Mr. Morris attended the_ State Press As sociation Convention. Miss Rebecca Tate was the guest of Miss Evelyn Rhodes in Niagara on Sunday. Miss Sue Evelyn Poe has returned to her home in Greensboro after visit ing Mr. and Mrs. M. Y. Poe for some time.
