THE PILOT, a Paper With Character, Aberdeen^ Noyth Cai^olin^ Friday, October 10, l;)oO, Cancer Clinic Next Week Nay Reduce Death Rate From Disease in County Dr. Symington Urges Those with Any Suspicion of Trouble to Attend Clinics at Carthage The Cancer Clinic begins next Mon^ day, October 13th and will be held at the Public Health Office, Carthage from 9 a. m. to 12 noon during that week. Dr. J. Symington, l*ublic Health Officer, announces. This will be the last publicity announcement possi ble before that date. October 13 to 18 ife the week appointed for tJancer campaign throughout the United States under the auspices of the American Society for the Control of Cancer. Cancer takes second place among the diseases causing death. In 1900 it occupied sixth place, tubercu losis occupying first place. Now can cer has so increased as to incidence and the cause of death that it now holds second place throughout the whole United States. This condition exists because cancer is neglected in its early stages and henee the plan ning of these clinics. Special efforts are now being made throughout the country to inform the people about the danger of cancer. Mortality rate from the cancer of the skin has de creased because cancer of the skin is more evident and more easily reach ed. Cancer as a disease, however, now holds second place among the causes of death. If cancer of others parts of the body were brought to notice and diagnosed, and treated as prompt ly as cancer of the skin, there would be a great reduction in the number of deaths from cancer. The death rate from cancer in all other parts of the body has increased 24 per cent in the last 10 years. People have learned to recognize the disease early when it appeal’s on the surface of the body and to take advantage of surgical and medical treatment which leads to recovery, but we want more prompt consul tation, diagnosis and treatment for all other parts of the body. While the cause of cancer is still an unsolved mystery, and little hope of recovery can be entertained for patients in the advanced stages of the disease, there is every reason to believe that def- mite progi-ess has been made in the control of cancer. Fully one-third fo all cancer occurs in accessible regions of the body where early detection on the part of the patient is easy. Since cancer is always a local disease at first, all of this one-third is subject to control and possible cure provided proper treatment is employed soon enough. This would save at least 1,- 500 lives annually and perhaps 3,000, a possibility indicated by the im provement in mortality from cancer of the skin and mouth. Delay and not cancer is the worst danger tfijom this disease. There w’ere 110,00 deaths from can cer throughoutJthe United States last year and unless more interest is tak en in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, the number will not only be the same or repeated this year will be increased. There were probably 360,000 cases of cancer in 1929 and the number of cases is steadily in creasing. Please do not forget the dates for the clinic, October, 13 to 18 from 9 a. m. to 12 noon. Wants Otto Caught Suspect Picked Up Here by Chief Beasley Says He’s Been Nabbed Seven Times Not to be outdone by other en terprising towns and cities of North Carolina Southern Pines im ported an “Otto Wood” Friday night, and the alarm being given, Chief Beasley gave chase and ar rested “Otto” on the highway bound north. “Otto” was well made up and upon first sight ap peared to be the real thing but upon a show down was undeniably about thirty-five years too aged. All the spurious Otto had to say was that this was the seventh time, and that was just seven times too many, and that he hoped by the hinges of the nether world that Otto Wood could be caught. GET HATCHING EGGS FROM TESTED HENS Because of the prevalence of white diarrhea in poultry since this indus try has become of commercial im portance in the State, growers need to get their hatching eggs from tested flocks only. This is the opinion expressed by R. S Dearstyne, head of the State Col lege poultry department, who has made a careful study of the poultry disease situation. The contrlo of white diarrhea is one of the chief poultry disease problems in the State at this time. This disease is caused by a minute germ which is trans mitted from hen to chick because the egg yolk forming the early food of the chick is filled with the germs. “It is probable that at least ten percent of all untested birds are car riers of this disease,” says Mr. Dear styne. “Not every egg laid by a car rier will be infected but analyses which we have made of 15,000 eggs from such birds show the infection ratio to run from two to 40 percent. Only 29.4 percent of 969 eggs laid by these carriers hatched. Of the few chicks hatched, a great majority are born with the disease.” Not onlw are the infected chicks sjck themselves and fail to develop froperly but they void great num bers of the germs and thus spread the disease to healthy chicks. Those whic hare able to throw off the di sease and grow into healthy appear ing birds are usually carriers and thus keep up the spread of the trouble year after year.
