Mrs. Nettie W. Smith of Brookline, Mass., is the guest at The Piedmpnt. Dr. A. McNeil Blair’s assistants, Miss Niles and Miss Mclver have re turned from Bethlehem. Dr. Blair is expected in a few days. Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Leonard have arrived to spend the winter here and are occupying the Shepard Cottage on Maine avenue. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Bariteau re turned Sunday from a motor trip through South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. Mrs. Robert Shepard and children have joined Mr. Shepard in Atlanta to spend the winter. Mrs. Maude Roger has returned to Southern Pines after spending the summer in New Hampshire. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kennedy, Fred Roberts, Miss Lillian Roberts, Mrs. S. B. Richardson, Mrs. L. E. Grover and Mrs. Dan McNeill motored to Fayetteville Thursday. Dr. and Mrs. Ramsay have return ed for the season and are occupying their attractive home on Weymouth Heights. A dozen ladies of the Parish Guild vv^ere present on Tuesday at the home of Mrs. John Jordan. Plans for the winter were discussed and committees appointed for the various depart ments of the work. Next week the ladies are to meet with Mrs. William McCord, 40 Connecticut avenue at 2:30 p. m. Mrs. Claude Hafer, who has been ill for a few days, is able to he out again. . Mrs. William F. Allen is expecting relatives from the north on Friday to visit her for some tinie. The Girls’ Hockey team was un able to go to High Point Tuesday for the game scheduled there, on account of rain. It was postponed until a la ter date. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Betterley and daughter, Barbara spent Tuesday in Charlotte. W. C. Arkell spent the' week-end here with his family at their home on Weymouth Heights. Mr. and Mrs. Warren Irish, who have been house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Emmett French, returned to Norristown, Pa., on Monday. Friends of Mrs. John Barron will bo glad to welcome her home again after her absence in the north. Mr. and Mrs. D. G. Stutz had as their guests over the week-end their brother, Linwood Stutz of Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Vittum of Bev erly, Mass., have arrived and are oc cupying their Connecticut avenue cot tage. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Reynolds have returned from Alabama where they have been visiting relatives. Wallace Case, Dick Sugg and Mait land Grover of U. N. C., spent the week-end here with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. John Ruggles return ed Monday from Wilmington where they spent the week-end. Hallowe’en gave the youngsters their long sought opportunity for a lot of fun but it was all good natured and the soap and chalk were all gone by noon of Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Durgin arrived from Manchester, N. H., Thursday evening and are at home on May street for the winter. Chief Beasley has “tagged” five arivers for violation of the new park ing ordinance. Imposition of five dol lars fine by Justice Windham follow ed. Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Leonard have motored in from Pleasantville, N. Y., leasing the Shepard house on Maine avenue for the season. Completely redecorated in a most charming color scheme the dining room of the Southern Pines Hotel has been opened for service by Proprietor Harrington. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Soper after en joying a week with their old time friends returned to their home in Washington Sunday. Mrs. F. M. Gardner and Miss Dun bar are at home on May street. Mrs. Lou Silverthorne, operating the “Treasure Shop” of Waynesville, has leased the south arcade of the bank building for the display of her wares here. Shields Cameron has leased the Shepard house on Maine avenue to 0. A. Leonard of Pleasantville, N. Y. Dave Hoskins reopens the Candy Shop today and we are glad to pass cn this cheering news to the child ren. Charles M. Macauley, of Lands- downe, Pa., was a week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. John N. Powell. The Rev. and Mrs. Ser’ arrived from Delevan, Wisconsin Sunday morning. Miss S. A. Nixon of East Orange, N. J., will return this week to South ern Pines for the winter and will be a guest at the W’^ayside Inn. Miss Nixon has been on a four months’ tour of North Carolina and Virginia, making extended visits in Raleigh, Asheville, Richmofnd and Washing ton, D. C. Mrs. Kate McKinley and Miss Hel en Gragory of New York were recent guests at Highland Lodge before op ening their Ridge avenue cottage. Mrs. Samuel Amdur and Miss Jes sie Stuart Rose of New York will be at the Highland Lodge for an extend- ea visit. The Rev. J. Fred Stimson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Southern Pines, entertained for the vveok-end Miss Warner of Hickory and his sister-in-law and nepView, Mrs. C. C. Stimson and son, Wyn J. Stim son. Mrs. D. F. Davis arrived Monday evening from her home in Windsor, Vermonit, to join h^r sister, Mrs. Grearson, for the winter. Mr. Davis expects to come later. HALLOWE’EN PARTY On Saturday night at her home on Weymouth Heights Miss Helena Kel ley entertained more than thirty guests at a gay Hallowe’en party. The house and grounds were lighted by orange and black lanterns in odd shape and sizes with here and there mysterious faces peering out. The large living room was gaily festooned with streamers and other appropriate decorations, all in the same color scheme. The costumes were unusually attrac tive and it required much delibera tion for the Judges to award the prizes. The girls prize went to Peggy Elliott and the boy’s to Ralph Chand ler, Jr., Edith Poate as a Chinese Mandarin coming in for honorable mention. An interesting guessing game drew more prizes for the lucky winners. Dancing followed, during which a delicious punch was served. Then came more games and a bounti ful supper.
