This lake, completed during the past year on the estate of John Warren Watson, of Philadelphia, between Southern Pines and Pine- hurst, is one of the new features of life in the Sandhills, both from the standpoint of beauty and pleasure. Mr. Watson has generously of fered the use of his lake, which covers an area of several square miles, to the public. This privilege has been taken advantage of through the summer months, scofes of residents of the section utilizing the sandy beach and floating rafts with their diving boards to keep cool \vhen the temperature hovered around the hundred mark. From the Eastern Beach of Watson Lake, where the public is granted bathiing privileges. In addition to a log boathouse for his canoes, Mr. Watson has. built at one end of his lake a motorboat house with attractive living quarters for himself above the slips. Sufficient depth of water has been retained under the building for the motorboats to run into their slips, space being provided for three boats. Above is a large living room, two bedrooms and bath and a small kitchen. The owner expects to spend much time in the Sandhills at various times during the year, and in summer will make his home in the boathouse building. He has already “stocked” his lake with numerous canoes, two of them sailing canoes, and with a number of motor boats of the outboard type, and he and his friends are planning sailing races and aquatic events during the coming spring, summer and fall. Tufts Lake, at Eagle Springs^ on the edge of the Sandhills. Gallery Lake, near Southern Pines J. D. Gallery of Pittsburgh, a winter resident of Southern Pines, last year purchased an expansive tract of land on the ridge over looking the town from the southeast, and in addition to clearing out the scrub oak and unattractive growth, he constructed a dam and backed up the water of a stream to provide a picturesque lake as the centerpiece of his estate. An idea of the beauty of this body of water may be gleaned from the accompanying photograph showing the state ly pines casting their shadows upon the waters.
