No Panic Signs at
Knollwood Heights
Action is succeeding- action so swiftly over at Knoll
wood Heights that those prophets who are telling' us
that the world is g’oing to the dog's have been run over
and lost in their own dust.
Look at the Remarkable Record.
Summer noted the lease of the Buffalo cottage on
the Barber estate by Mr. White, with the privileg'e of en
larging- and altering. He put some $20,000 worth of im
provements on the place, securing a purchase right and
then, with that rig-ht, the rig-ht to buy a hundred acres
adjoining.
The next shot out of the box was the enlarg-ement
and rebuilding of the Fownes house which has been
transformed into a castle, and with its garden and
shrubbery will be one of the most appealing features of
the Sandhills landscape.
While work was in progi*ess rebuilding the Fownes
house a group of prog-ressive men planned a duplicate
of the famed Westover Colonial home of Governor Wil
liam Byrd of Virginia- The roof is now going on that
mag'nificent house which has few equals in the South.
From the time the walls commenced to arise inquiries
have been asking about the possibility of purchasing
the place and it looks now as if Mr. Fownes and Mr. Blue
will have another good neighbor there next season.
A week or two ago L. L. Biddle,II arranged a sale
of the Donald Ross house to C. W. Middleton who has
been in this section long enough to be acquainted with
its advantages and to know that he wanted a.home in
the Knollwood Neighborhood. Donald Ross, who knows
what the influence of golf is and who also knows what
is to be the influence of the Pinehurst territory where
golf has reached the most intensive form of any place
of its kind on the globe, had built for himself a house
at Knollwood. He built that house because his judgment
told him that with the certainty of development ahead
of that half-way spot between Southern Pines and Pine
hurst in a short time would grow up such a community
that somebody would want his house at a profit. He was
not deceived. His sale was a spot cash transaction. The
Sandhills gets a good neighbor. Mr. Ross is pleased with
his experience. Mr. Middleton finds a home and sur
roundings to his desire and the converging influences
tell the world that Knollwood is no longer a project. It
is a positive fact and one that everybody can see clear
ly.

And Now —
A similar story hangs about the new home of T.
N. Barnsdall. Some men of the community appreciating
the opportunity bought the location there on Grove
Drive and built an ideal house. Last season it was rent
ed and this year when Mr. Barnsdall was looking for a
house to rent he was shown this-cottage by Shields Cam
eron. He said at once that instead of renting it he was
going to buy it. And the transaction was closed as quick
ly as the necessary papers could be prepared. This cot
tage had been built as an investment by men familiar
with conditions here who had full confidence in the days
ahead of Knollwood and their confidence was rewarded
by a spot cash sale.
Knollwood again gets another good citizen. Anoth
er man who will have his friends about him to help in
broadening the pleasures of good fellowship and estab
lish desirable homes in the neighborhood. And probably
some of them will become permanent residents.
A Bit of History—
A copy of The Pinehurst Outlook for November,
1922, eight years ago, notes the opening of the Mid-
Pines Club house. Judge Way and James Barber had
finished houses up along the Mid-Lands road that Fran
cis Deaton had laid out in the sand. Farther up the hill
Richard Tufts had started a modest cottage which has
been rebuilt two or three times until it is now the mag
nificent Fownes home. The settlement was Knollwood
Village, and it had just come out of the blackjacks. Now
Knollwood Village has the Mid-Pines Club, the Pine
Needles Inn—a large five story brick structure—^two
Donald Ross eighteen-hole golf courses. The Ridge is
sprinkled with homes of the highest type with every fa
cility and utility.
New buildings in the neighborhood in progress or
finished during the year closed will exceed two hundred
thousand dollars. Sales of finished hohies will reach
probably half as much more. Development in general in
the neighborhood will add to the total, showing that
people who are interested in Knollwood are not alarmed
by the financial sit'uation-
Knollwood is not only a place for men of means to
make for themselves ,one of the most desirable homes
in the world, but it is also probably the safest place foi-
investment of money that can be found anywhere while
clouds are on the financial sky.
