Music, drama, poetry and the dance will be combined in a novel lecture- recital given next ‘^Monday night, March 16, in Flora Maclk)nald College auditorium by Vachel Lindsay, one of the most celebrated of modem Amer ican poets. He interpreted his own poems with all the passion and phy sical expression of an actor. These poems are all written to be read aloud, chanted or declaimed; in some cases they are to be danced to, also, and played as games. They possess a deep rhythm, with a rush and a real life in them. His “Chinese Nightin gale” is thought by some to be the “greatest poem written in America since the Pilgrims came over.” Mr. Lindsay, who is a modern troubadour, has tramped thousands of miles of this country, singing his songs frora coast to coast. His work is by no means limited to America. A London paper not long ago published a eu logy to him in which the following ap peared: America can never be re garded as submerged by commercial ism so long as Vachel Lindsay chants his songs fro-m New York to New Mexico.” This is the last of the attractions booked for the year and the commit tee on the lecture and concert course are to be complimented on their var ied and delightful selections. In a statement issued this week, the United States Civil Service Com mission advised the public not to go to W’’ashington for the purpose of seeking Federal employment. The Commission explained that the District of Columbia Committee on •Employment has called its attention to a number of pathetic cases where persons have come from consi<lerable distances expecting to obtain a Gov ernment position on the strength of having passed a civil service exam- nation only to become stranded and in j some instances a public charge. I It was pointed out that even if a person has passed a civil service examination with a high rating he has no assurance that a position will be immediately available to him. Ap pointments to Federal positions, the I ^llommission said, are made only as the i actual needs of the service require, and in accordance with the civil ser- j vice rules, and the presence of an ap plicant in Washington can not in any ! way improve or experite any pros- j pects of employment he may have. The Commission stated in conclu- j ion that no one should come to Wash- i ington expecting to receive a Federal I position except in response to a defi- ! nite offer of employment from a Gov- 1 ernment establishment.
