Price Five Cents 3IC <7S \rs I I ■k IVI A D E O I IN MOORE COUNTY THE MAGNITUDE OF MGORE COUNTY’S MANUFACTURING INTERESTS IS NOT REALIZED BY THE AVERAGE RESIDENT OF THE COUNTY. THIS IS AN ATTEMPT TO PORTRAY IN PART THE VARIED CHARACTER ’ OF THESE PRODUCTS. This is “Made in North Carolina Week.” Moore County plays its part in the production of the world’s goods. It is a county of varied industries, and among the products are the following: Hosiery, Rayon, Cotton Goods, Furniture, Mo tor Truck Bodies, Ornamental Iron, Archery Goods, Pottery, Lumber, Talc and Talc Prod ucts, Brick, Tile and Building Stone, Flour and Meal, Carpets, Rugs and Baskets. Moore County had a total of 60 manufacturing es tablishments which turned out $1,466,670 in value of manufactured products during the year 1929. The average number of wage earners employed for the year in these plants was 533 and the total wages paid amounted to $350,969. The cost of materials and fuel and the purchased current used was $783,- 989, and the plants of the county used 3,O0X) horse- ' power of electricity during the year. VARIETY OF PRODUCTS The establishments of Moore county include a rath er wide range of industries, none very large, yet all of Them exerting an influence in the fortunes of the county. The silk mill at Hemp and the cotton mills at High Falls and Vass are large enough to be of import ance and to afford employment to a large num.ber of persons directly and indirectly. Each of these institu tions constitutes a community largely in Itself, High Falls perhaps more particularly than the other two, for the mills developed there years ago by the Woody fam ily grew up in a sort of paternal manner that stimulat ed the county around by its influence and the fact that the m.ills em.ployed the people, bought their grain and cotton for manufacture, provided the schools, maintain ed the roads, and created the social atmosphere of the village. At Vass the mill was largely influential along sim ilar lines, but other things lent a hand, and Vass is more of a general settlement than High Falls, yet the cotton plant is a chief factor in the prosperity of the village. At Hemp the silk mills was the result of a design to broaden the industrial field in a community already of some importance- The result has been a success.
