Woman’s Club Meets The July meeting of the Vass Wo man’s Club was held on Wednesday evening of last week on Mrs. S. R. Smith’s lawn, with Mrs. Smith and Miss Nettie Gschwind as joint host- ited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Norton near Raeford, Sunday af ternoon. The Norton baby, Alex Smith, has been suffering with mas toid trouble for the past month and a half and shows only slight improve ment. Mrs. Sarah Margaret McNeill left Sunday for a visit in the home of her step-daughter, Mrs. Hector Wat son, in the Antioch commiinity. Russell Thompson went to Sharon, S. C., Sunday to spend a few days with 0. M. Spurlin, Jr. Mrs. Gice Allen and little son, Gice, Jr., who have been visiting her father, E. L. McNeill, for some time returned last week to their home in Allen, accompanied by Mrs. Allen’s small brother, Alex McNeill. Miss Doza Upchurch of Louisburg came Friday to be the guest of her friend, Miss Catharine Graham, for several days. Miss Nettie Gschwind spent the Fourth in Marietta visiting friends, and returned Sunday. Miss Beulah Cox of Hamlet came Sunday to spend some time with friends and relatives. Misses Elizabeth and Jeannette Baggett returned Sunday from Ral eigh where they had been the guests of their aunt, Mrs. L. E. Newton, for several weeks. Their many friends are delighted to have these girls home again. Another of the younger set who is receiving a hearty welcome home is Joseph Matthews, who returned Sat urday from a stay of five weeks in Washington, D. C. Mrs. S. D. Byrd has as her guest her mother, Mrs. Machel Pate, of Goldsboro, and her sister, Mrs. T. These were found to contain refreshments and drinking cups, so a member of each group was hastily dispatched to look for “the fountain of youth” and when this was found, the others were notified and promptly went to help themselves from the fountain. AQUATIC EVENTS ATTRACT MANY VISITORS TO LAKEVIEW Lakeview, the usual mecca of Sand- hil pleasure seekers on the Fourth, drew’ its ^customary crowd on Satur day. The chief events of the day were swimming and diving contests for both boys and girls, and in addition a beauty contest for girls only, of course, won by Miss Ruth Miller of Albemarle.
