Pa^-e Eight THE PILOT, Southern Pines and Aberdeen, North Carolina Friday^ May 11 1934 Kiwanis Fights For State Driver License Petitions to Legislature Placed in Circulation in County Asking New Law A fight for a State driver’s license for automobile operators was re launched at the Kiwanis Club meet ing this week and all members urged to sign the petitions now in circula tion in the county calling upon the next Legislature to pass suitable leg islation. These petitions are in the City Clerk’s office, Southern Pines; Col. G. P. Hawes’ office, Pinehurst, the offices of the Recorder of Deeds and Tax Collector in Carthage. Col. Hawes stated that we will not stop killing people on North Carolina high ways until we have some supervision over drivers of motor cars. N. L. Gibbon, candidate for the State Legislature, and Sheriff C. J. McDonald, candidate for re-election, spoke briefly at the meeting. It was announced that $140. had been raised to date in the club’s campaign for support of a bed in the children's ward of the Moore County Hospital this yeai'. "You have an enviable oppor tunity but the people of the state do not try to get visitors to visit your unsurpassed scenic spots. Lost Opportunities •’I have been here 10 days and not one person, filling station op erator, hotel clerk or other citizen has said one word urging me to visit your beautiful mountain coun- t ry. •'If I had been in California that long a hundred people would have been telling me the beauty spots of the state that should be visited. "You must tell the world what you have to show. I shall attempt to help in this .program by reporting on what I see here within the next few weeks. The final game of the Pinehurst- Southern Pines exhibition series will be played tomorrow, Satur day afternoon on the Southern Pines field. This will probably be the deciding encounter. The two clubs were playing yesterday at Pinehurst as The Pilot went to press. Southern Pines with a weak ened club, and a victory for the Pinehurst team will deadlock the series at two games all. The locals are minus the services of Vann and Myrick and possibly Patterson and Hunter for this contest. They should be able to present their full strength tomorrow, however, in the final clash. May 14, 15, 16. with a Tuesday mat- iree is not what the title would indi cate by the casual reader. It is a comedy-mysteiy, in which its novelty lies in the effective use it makes of a liberal assortment of gags and situa tions from the old bag of comedy tricks, with not a serious moment in the whole picture. While there’s drama, romance, thrill, excitement, suspense, intrigue and mystery, it is loaded viith a lot of fun making, sup plied mainly by Ned Sparks and Zazu Pitts, but participated in by all - even the dead man—that alter nately gave the preview audience the creeps and spasms of laughter. “Private Scandal” is audience en tertainment even if ti lacks the fancy ■wrapping of "big" cast names, and its okay for the youngsters as well as the adults. Another comedy entertainment, through which runs a unique and ex citing romantic theme, is "Thirty Day Princess,” the attraction for Thurs- d.nr, Friday and Saturday, May 17, 18, 19 with a Saturday matinee. It is also full or humanness that makes for popular all-family entertainment. Modem, ^mi-tropical in atmosphere, localed in New York, the story deals in familiar matters and situations in 8 smartly novel fashion. F’ast moving, action compensating dialogue, the comedy, r..inance, light bu:: sharp drama, [ jlitical and newspaper' ex- citeniev.t are logically worked into the premise of a commoner playing Princess and a Prince,ss .yearning to be a cotnr.ioner, Sylvia Sidney takes all po.'sible advantage of a light role and "kicks in ' with the best perform ance in the best picture she has done in laau'- moons. Cary Grant is also especially effective. An added attrac tion is the newest Our Gang Comedy, entitled, "For Pete's Sake." TO ADDHKSS OKADTATKS The Rev. G. Ray Jordan, pastor of the Centenary Methodist Church in Wniston-Saleni, will make the grad uation addi'ess to Southern Pines High School seniors next month. Carolina Theatre Southern Pines, N. C.
