FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER Mrs. R. J. 3i(»rrist'u U'ritts from t'herryville of l{i*n)llcctions of Sari ihills i The gathering of the old folks during the Spring Festival brought out a lot of history of the Sandhills, and along vVith tho event comes a letter from Mis. U. J. Morrison, ot Cherryville, up in the mountain sec tion. She says of some printed com ment, “I was glad to note your men tion of your friends (and mine), John Buchan, our old neighbor. Dear Mr. Buchan! Do you recall ‘I says, says I?' As a child I remember when Dr. G. H. Saddleson lived at Manly and his lancing of my abscessed throat. Another event was my first day in school at Southern Pines, where Mrs. Ada Rockwell was the teacher. Dur ing that day Howard Saddleson was put in a corner wearing a dunce cap for misbehavior. George Kemp read about the ‘Clucking Hen,” Carrie Poe gave a recitation with much feeling, ‘It Might Have Been,' which impress ed |me very forcibly and sadly. Strange I should remember these things so vividly after all the years. I was eight years old at that time. “I recall the Widow Blue’s old place the ai’rival through a lane, rail fences on either .lide, past a garden enclosed in a picket fence, and inside what a panorama of colored flow ers! I can see the huge snowball bushes at the rear and masses of beds of brightly blossoming flowers, Sweet Williams, it seems, and por. tulaccas. Into the two-story li:.use, under large trees, small bed rooms opening off of a large living room. I peeper into those small bedrooms and noticed the 'high' beds (to me then. I I was always served freshly baked light biead with delicious hon ey. Sitting on the front porch we saw a field of waving grain, spreading apple trees and a gay young colt capering. Wandering to the back of the house we saw where 'Uncle Abra ham,’ colored, had lived, and died from choking while eating a chick en gizzard. “A Mrs. Meadowcraft firm the i North had spent some time at Mrs. j Blue’s with rooms up stairs and 1 I heard my mother tell of her present- I ing me with a dainty dress as a natal I birthday gift. “Near this old place was what we called the 'Mineral Spring,’ where we had good times wading in clear wa ter and enjoying the good drinking water, the like of which I have never tasted since. And how well I remem ber Peter Shaw. I saw him plowing and wearing an old time ‘duster’ as he ployed. On visiting at his home I can still all but see the dark parlor, a Sabbath-like stillness the horse-hair upholstering, (how I slid off those sleek chairs), and Oh, the awesome ness of that picture on the wall of the Reverend Evander McNair, with long-flowing white beard. Our en tertainment was royal there. I saw there the first ‘abacus’ stereoscopic pictures, and at the Methodist church in Manly the first marriage I had ever witnessed, that of R. N. Page to Miss Flora Shaw. The flower girls wore pink hollyhocks pinned on their shoulders. “Strange memories come dowu with the years.” SOI THERN PINES LIBRARY ON SI MMER SCHEDULE The trustees of the Southern Pines Libraj-y announced this week that ' the Library will go on the summer ; schedule beginning next Wednesday, May 16th. Duke vs. Davidson North C’arolina Collejjes To I’la.v Here on Saturday of >.'c*xt Year's Festival A baseball game between Duke University and Davidson College on the Southern Pines diamond is practically assured for Saturday, April 13th, 1935 as a feature of next year's Spring Blossom Fes tival, the committee stated yes terday. Barnsdall Imports Plants For Garden iVIany Foreijrn Species Growinji on Attractive Estate in Knolhvood T. N. Barnsdall's home at Knoll- wood is another of the interesting developments in that quarter. Mr. Barnsdall is an enthusiastic archer, and on the rear of his large piece of ground he maintains a modern shooting butt, fully equipped to carry on the sport. But it is hidden from the road by a highly interesting gar den and lawn, the work of Mr. Mor- ell along with Mr. Barnsdall, who is also a gardener on an amateur bas is, and the two of the’n have a un ique c.xhibition. With Morell's skill and knowledge as a botanist and planter and Barnsdall's taste for things of this sort and his acquaint ance the world around, the two have gathered a variety of trees and shrubs and flowers (and made them grow I that is a rarity on a small aiea of ground. The contributions come from all over the globe, but con ditions have been made so enticing for them here in the sand that they grow as cheerfully as though they were in their native soils of China, South America, Europe, Africa or elsewhere. A list of the varieties shows about a hundred different kinds of plants. Some of the strangers in this com munity are Japanese Holly, Indian Hawthorn, Chinese Tea, Japanese Acuba, Italian Cypress, Texas Ar- j borvitae, Cork Bark Oak. Japanese , Evergreen Oak. Japanese Black and Red Pines, Cedar of Lebanon, Greek i Juniper, Chinese Firethorn, Spanish ■ Broom, Korean Spirea, English Jun- [ ipers. and many other interesting and curious things. With these is a long ; list of plants native to this conti- j nent, but from other sections. And I the feature of note is that Morell has j them all growing. Mr. Bam.sdall’s I example is a helpful factor in the I Sandhills, for it is showing folks how : to add to the range of their home and j garden embellishment. It is another ' straw that points the direction of the wind not only at Knollwood but in all the Sandhills country. PINEBLUFF Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shaw and Mrs. J. J.
