Relief Cannery Set
Up in Jackson Springs
Peach I*roducts To Be Put Up

Needy Families
An inter-county cannery for the
counties of Moore. Montgomery and
Richmond has been set up in Jackson
Springs by the relief administration
for the purpose of making peach but
ter, jam. canned peaches and other
peach products, for u.se next winter
in school lunches and for distribution
to relief families. If peaches are
available, it is planned to begin op
eration next week.
The equipment will be owned by tne
State office and the plan is for the
cannery to be a “traveling cannery.”
It will probably be moved to North
Wilkesboro for the apple season, to
Chadbourn for the strawberry sea
son. and to other sections where there
will 4je fruit products to be canned.
It will be operated by the adminis
tration in the county in which It is
located from time to time. Moore
is the first county in which it will
be operated.
Included in the equipment are two
steam pressure cookers holding thir
ty number three cans each and a
sixty-gallon double thickness copper
kettle with coils between the lays to
distribute the heat evenly from top
to bottom. This kettle will be use<l
for preserving. The cannery is located
in an imvsed garage.
Peaches will be procured from near
by growers who will be paid for their
fruit or given canned good.s in ex
change.
