Page Six THE PILOT. Southern Pines and Ahrdecn^ North Carolina Friday, July 27, 1934. At me APITAL By M. R. DunnaKan, The Pilot’s Raleigh Correspondent Steps have been taken by the N. C. Emergency Relief Administration in the past week which are expected to be important contributions to improv ing the condition of relief families in the State this winter, and even perma- tently. One is the corporation to help ■in providing homes in rural rehabili tation; another is the program of helping rural relief families plan prop er food and feed crops for the winter, and the third is the suggestion of a meat packing plant to can the beef to be secured from the 75,000 cattle to be shipped into this State. Thirteen road projects have been prepared and turned over to the fed eral bureau of public roads for ap proval, and all approval will be in cluded in a letting to be held early in August. These projects will about use up the federal allotment of emer gency highway funds. Bids on supplying 750 chasses and 750 bodies for school busses will be opened in Raleigh July 27 by the Di vision of Purchase and Contract. About 40 other big items are includ ed in the letting of that date. The busses are for use in tran.sporting school children beginning this fall, taking the places of worn-out busses. Tlie federal government has given a grant to help pay the cost of these busses. North Carolina collected $14,773,282 from the 6-cent gasoline tax in 1933 and consumed 246,160,036 gallons of tax-paid gasoline, the current issue of “American Highways” shows in a table. Only 11 states collected more from this tax than did North Caro lina, and only 16 states consumed more gasoline in 1933. Two states, Florida and Tennessee have a 7-cent gas tax, and five others have the same rate, 6-cent, as North Carolina. Nine states have a 5-cent tax. 16 states a 4-cent t£ix, 12 have a Scent tax, and three have a 2-cent tax. If North Carolina matches the federal funds provided in full after this year, it will have available for roads and kindred projects during the next two years the following: highways and extensions through cities, $22,- 400,000; bridges on federal aid sys tem, $2,200,000; railroad grade cross ings, $5,000,000; elevating or depress ing tracks in cities $3,000,000; separ ating highway grade crossings, $300,- OOO.
