Box 129S, i Southern Pines, C. ! ‘‘Never have we previewed a pro duction that filled u.s with such en thusiasm as “One Night of Love,” says Charlie Picquet. This is the at traction at the Southern Pines the atre Monday, Tuesday and Wednes day, September 17. 18, 19, with a Tuesday matinee. "And we can easi ly understand how it received such an ovation by a capacity Hollywood pre view audience at which time the pat rons 'went wild in acclaim of Grace Moore and thrilled to her magnifi- cient voice.’ As a forerunner of the new season's product it sets a pace that will make all other producers look to their laurels.” Such a wholesome, entertaining of fering. combining love, romance, music, and down-to-earth human in terest story is mighty hard to beat— even hard to live up to. It is the sea son’s most distinctive and distin guished picture, with the profuse de. lights of music, song, laughter and beauty in quality, unequalled even in the most selective of the motion picture palazzi. And iLs star. Grace Moore, adds to the importance of the occasion with a convincing de monstration that besides the clear glory of her voice, she brings to the new medium a brilliant historionic talent together with a photographic beauty and filmable personality in perfect combination. It is recom mended without reservation to every member of the family. For it not only presents Gi'ace Moore and Tul- lie Carminati i.s a delightful comedy, but the picture introduces informally and lightly a number of lovsly anas, beautifully sung by Miss Moore from r. variety of the operas. “The Scarlet P^mpress.” which more than justifies its advance her alding as Marlane Dietrichs great est starring opportunity, and Direc tor Josef Von Sternberg's most pre tentious production, is the attrac tion Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 20, 21. 22, with a Satur day matinee. Based on a diary by the glamorous Catherine the Great of Russia, who ruled her country with an iron hand and yet was ruled herself by roman tic impulses, “The Scarlet Empress’’ must be rated a spectacle by any standards of judgment. It goes be- yond lavishness of production end ar tistic beauty, however, in that it is one of the most gripping dramatic stories yet to reach the screen. Miss Dietrich, as Catherine, offers p. characterization which compels attention throughout the picture. I Epidemic of Sore Eyes in j County Warned Against j Danger of Spread of Ophthalmia i Increased With Opening of Schools With the schools of the county open children come in touch with each oth er more than in the summer months, and infectious disea.ses like ophthal mia are more easily passed from one child to anotiier than in the summer vacation, says Dr. J. Symington, pub lic health officer. Ophthalmia, conjunctivitis, pink eye or sore eye.s, is a contagious di sease and the patient affected by it might very well be quarantined, al though at present there is no quaran tine for this disease. Conjunctivitis is very contagious and is carried easily from one child to another, and adults al.so are fre quently affected by it. , In Egypt and some other Oriental coimtries as many as 80 percent of the population are sometimes affected by ophthalmia. It is carried by ordi nary house flies, but the little black gnat is probably the greatest agent in spreading the disea.se. One child gets a sore eye and these little in veterate, persistent pests soon attack the sore eye and infect their mouths and feet wtih germs of ophthalmia. They then attack the well eye of the same child and the second eye becomes infected. From this one patient these little gnats carry a culturp and scratch and bite the culture into the eyes of the children of the same fam ily or carry it to other children of another house close by. Any child vis iting a family where there are sore eyes may be attacked and become in fected by these little flies even if the visit is a short one, so it is best for children to keep away from any one suffering from sore eyes so as to es cape being infected. The breeding places or inese little creatures should be destroyed by burning or .spraying, and all houses should have the windows and doors screened to keep them on the outside. Now is the time to fight the disease and keep it from becoming a wide spread epidemic. Dr. Symington says he has noticed recently some cases of opthalmia in several families in different parts of the county. The surrounding of homes- and schools should be kept clear of weeds and in a sanitary condition and no scraps o! food should be left lying around to entire these dangerous lit tle flies. They seem to be especially fond of hai'boring under hickory leaves and if there are hickory trees near a school or dwelling they should receive special attention in spraying. If every one joins in the fight against flies and gnats there will be no epidemic of sore eyes. FOR SALE; 1927 Pontiac Coach, in fine condition, good engine and tires. Low mileage. Inquire Alex.
