Cashier and district have more to gain from this election than Mr. Spence has. Another instance is the whole board of commissioners. From the start Wilbur Currie has Ijeen pushed into the commissioner’s office. Each succeeding election a call from the people has in fluenced him to be a candidate again and in spite of his own de sire. Gordon Cameron was pro- po.sed b.v some of the people of his community and in the same way Frank Cameron came into the board, and at each election the call has been for these men. The same sentiment has been ex pressed for Mr. Reynolds, and when Mr. McCrimmon was sug gested as a candidate his com munity took up the matter as a persona! affair and backed him through. These men have a t:isk ahead of them that is not equalled by anything else in the county in the u-ay of govern- meat and the burden the count l;<ys on their shoukiers and the absurd salar.v of about forty ♦lollar.' a year that it pays each of them shows how completely their work is public service. I Here are six men. practically drafted, to the most important places in public administration, paid the humorous salary of an errand boy, loaded with the re- .sponsibilities of the administra tion of millions of dollars in Slate and county money, and it' is to be hoped that the people, of the county who have brought i them into office will be ready at! all times to stand by in what ever these captives in office shall do. It is a situation rarely equalled in public affairs, and it puts on the people of the county a compensating respon winter. People are somewhat out of their scare, and looking for a laugh again, and for recrea tion. They are profiting by the lesson of the bumps, and busi ness will go forward again and bigger than ever because more people will do more business. More people will come this wa.v. The Sandhills are far more at tractive now than ever before. They will be more so from year to year and moi'e folks will be aware of what is here and come to share what is to be enjoyed. This may not be the best year we ever had. but it will be bet ter than a lot we thought good. And out of the hurly-burly we will advance because all the things we ever had we have now along with a k)t more. The man who does not ha\e an optimistic faith today in the Sandhills has a blind eye. but in the course of time the prospects will be so plain that he will even see with that one good one that remains. OUTLOOK FOR THE WINTER The Pilot is an optimist be cause there is nothing else to be if you are to entertain the idea that creation was not a failure from the beginning. You can be nothing else if you have any perception of the capabilities of the human race and of the as- s3ts of Nature, The whole pro longitudinal measurements of the earth or with time as indi cated in California and compar ed with New York knows that it is three hours from New York to San Francisco as the sun moves. Three 'hours after the sun comes up on this side the continent it comes up on the Pacific, and nobody is startled by the speed. Yet that is noth ing, for the vastly greater speed of the earth in its path about the sun is another magnified rate of travel, and on that journey we travel about two million miles a day, which is also slow time, present rates. Not that there is any particular purpose in it, but neither is there any purpose in sauntering down the road on foot at the rate of three miles an hour when we can fly from New York to Pinehurst some day at three hundred. Of course folks ask how about the rail road crossings where such fast speed is made. But maybe in a few years railroad crossings.will be as ancient as Nineveh, and maybe highways will give way to airways. Nobotly knows, and nobody need care much, for what is ahead is coming regardless of our guesses on it. The future is bigger than the past, as we un fold the secrets of Nature.
