The Week in Vass
Christmas programs at the var
ious churches, arranged so that no
service conflicted with aniother,
brought pleasure to the community at
large on Sunday and Monday even
ings.
At 6:15 Sunday evening n delight
ful pageant, "The First Christmas,”
was given in the Baptist church by
the Sunday School and B. Y. P. U.
before a crowded house. A choir of
some two dozen voices sang carols,
the Scripture was read by the Rev.
C. A. Lawrence, and a number of the
young people appeared in the pa
geant. A special feature was a read
ing by little Jackie King, which was
especially good.
From the Baptist church the c rowd
went to the Presbyterian church for
the 7:15 service. With Miss Katha
rine M. .Millan as reader of a short
sketch entitled ‘‘The Christmas An
gel Takes Charge,” tableaux telling
in a vivid way of the classes of per
sons aided by the ministerial relief
fund were presented most effective
ly. Christmas stockings previously
distributed as receptacles for “joy
gifts” to apply to this fund were
received at the close of this special
feature, after which Mr. Lawrence
brought an impressive Christmas
message.
On Monday evening at 7:00 o’clock
the tiny tots of the Presbyterian
church school gave a short program
which reached the climax with the
appearance of Santa Claus, who dis
tributed gifts to them.
At 7:45 a large crowd assembled
in the Methodist Church for a “white
gift” service at which time a beau
tiful pageant, “ As With Gladness
Men of Old,” was presented with Miss
Marjorie Leslie as reader. A junior
choir sang appropriate selections and
a brief talk was made by the pastor,
the Rev. L. M. Hall. “White gifts”
for the Methodist Orphanage were
brought forward by representatives
of the various departments of the
church school, and the program was
brought to a close with a tableau in
which all the characters in the pa
geant and a number of angels ap
peared.
Miss Anna Edgerton of Salisbury
is visiting her sister, Mrs. T. F.
Cameron.
Miss Agnes Cameron of Washing
ton. D. C., is with her family here
for the holiday season.
The Rev. and Mrs. C. A. Lawrence
and family spent from Wednesday
until Saturday with Mrs. Lawrence’s
mother, Mrs. Annie Crisp, in Falk
land.
S. R. Smith went to Sanford Sun
day afternoon to see Archibald Mc
Gill, who continues ill at the Lee
County Hospital.
