Smith returned on Thursday of last week from Manteo, where she spent Christmas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Weatcott. She was accompanied home by her sis ter. Miss Mary Davis Westcott. Robert Laubscher returned last week from a month's visit with rel atives in Pennsylvania and New York. Mr.s. Seth W. Lassater and daught ers of Smithfield and Miss Glennie Godwin of Selma were week-end guests at the home of Mrs. Mary E. Edwards. Mrs. VV. D. Matthews, Mrs. H. A. Borst and Mrs. S. R. Smith attended the funeral of D. J. Pierce at the Cameron Presbyterian Church Thurs day morning. Clyde S. Thompson and daxighter Vjvian of Charleston, S. C., and Al ton Thompson of Maxton visited their aunt, Mrs. Arch McGill, on Thursday. The Rev. Charles A. Lawrence, af ter an attack of influenza suffered while on a visit to Falkland, was able to return to his home in Vass on Wednesday. Mrs. Lawrence lemained with her mother, Mrs. Annie Crisp, who is ill with pneumonia. Mr. and Mrs. Royall H. Cox and children of Lumberton were dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Tyson Thursday evening. Misses Anna and Kmily Laubscher and Eva Callahan, student nurses at a High Point hospital, came home foi a holiday visit on Saturday. Miss Cal lahan returned on Sunday and the Misse.s Laubscher on Tuesday. On Sunday afternoon Misses Anna and Family Laubscher and Helen Klingenschmidt, Henry Borst. Jr., Mrs. Emma Laub.scher, Misses Nettie (Jschwind and Sara Edith Matthews and Robert Laubscher went to the tl?ere for several weeks. Harry has gained seven pounds recently, and Fort Bragg hospital to see Harry Laubscher, who has been a patient .-eemed to be feeling fine Sunday, Misse.s Mary and Exie Beasley and R. F. Beasley attended a family re union at the home of their brother, B. F. Beasley, in Raleigh on Christ mas Day. Miss Mary Beasley join ed a group of relatives at a house party in Franklin ton on Thursday. Miss Ossie Edwards of Garner spent a part of last week here with her mother, Mrs. Mary E. Edwards. Miss Jessie Brooks, instructor in fourth-year English in a Wilson high school, ‘left Sunday after spending the h >lidays with her mother, Mrs. G. W. Drooks. Mrs. W’. C. Byrd and children of Albemarle spent’the greater part of last week with Mrs. Byrdls mother, Mrs. J. A. Keith. Mrs. A. M. Cameron and children, Marian and A. Mac, returned Sunday from a holiday visit with relatives in Buie's Creek. ■ Lawrence Furr was painfully but not seriously injured last week when a fire crecker which he was light ing with a cigarette duck exploded in his hand, burning his hand and striking him in one of his eyes. The child, intent upon blowing the duck to ignite the fuse, failed to notice when it began to sizzle. Misses Sallie and Bessie Cameron and Elizabeth Keith and Mrs. W. H. Keith spent Friday in Fayetteville. Mrs. Alton Chappell and little Elizabeth Ann of Sanford visited Mrs. Annie Chappell and Mr. and Mr.s. J. E. Byrd last week. Mrs. Irene Byrd of Albemarle spent Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. G. W'. Griffin. Mrs. R. D. Braddy and son, Thomp son, of Rockfish community called on relatives here Friday. Secretaries to Meet Here Jan. 10 Forty Councils in Nine Counties Will Be Represented at Conference On Thursday night, January 10th the Recording and Finance Secretar ies of all the Junior Order U. A. M. councils in the 12th, 17th and 18th districts will meet at Southern Pines for a dinner conference. The meet ing will be held in the annex of the j church of Wide Fellowship, with din ner served promptly at 7 o’clock, followed immediately by the confer ence. I Representatives of the State and National Councils will be present and a general discussion of work, espec ially the duties of secretaries, will be entered into. District No. 12 with E. P. Leather- bury of Hamlet as District Deputy is composed of Anson, Richmond and Scotland counties and has 10 coun ties with 462 members. District No. 17 with Frank F. Watson of Sanford as District Deputy is composed of Lee, Montgomery and Moore counties and has 15 councils with 1216 mem bers. District No. 18 with the Rev. Hardy Lanier of Stedman as District Deputy is composed of Cumberland, Harnett and Robeson counties and has 15 councils with 1334 members. The Local organization. Southern Pines Council No. 76 of which J. Bruce Cameron is Councilor, will en tertain the zone meeting. C. W. Sny der, Field Secretary, of Winston-Sa lem was in town a few days ago as sisting with the preparations for the meeting. A collection of a number of miniature Christmas stockings containing the “Joy Gifts” was taken, amounting to $11.00 for this cause. W. N. GREARSON Telephone 6933 Southern Pines, N. C. Probable cause of guilt was found in Recorder’s Court Monday in the case of James Day, colored, charged with the li*rceny of $71 from M. W. Graham, colored of Hoke county, and he was placea unaer bond of $200 to await trial in .Superior Court. Day is alleged to have attempted to pull a flimflam game on Graham when the latter visited an Aberdeen tobacco market to .sell tobacco. Day was present and knew of the sale. According to the story, he approach ed Graham and imparted the infor mation that he had found a pocket- book with a lot of money in it on the warehouse floor, and offered to split with him on a 50-50 basis if Graham would put up a certain amount of money, l^e accompanied Graham to the bank to get his check cashed, but Graham became suspi cious and tried to get away from him. When it became apparent that Graham was about out of the no tion of becoming a partner in the plan, Day, it is alleged, snatched his wallet containing $71 and made a get-away. On Christmas eve Graham was in Laurinburg and happened to catch sight of Day. He notified officers and the man was arrested. Having qualified as administrator of the estate of N. J. Patterson, de- ceased, late of Moore county.
