E. C. Stevens Demands Reasons
For Discharge of Mr. Huntley
Says County Commission Owes
It to Tax Collector and Pub
lic To Explain Action
THE
Carolina Theatres
Pinehurst-Southern Pines
PRESENT
At Pinehurst
Mon., Jan. 28th,
3:00 and 8:15
In an open letter sent this week to
W'ilbur H. Currie, chairman of the
Board of Commissioners of Moore
county, Eugene C. Stevens of South
ern Pines calls upon the commission
“to give the reasons, publicly, why
Mr. Huntley was discharged.” Mr.
Stevens’ letter reads:
"Dear Mr. Currie:
‘I have read in the press with great
astonishment that the Board of Com
missioners has fired Mr. Huntley
from the position of Tax Collector,
and have appointed a member of the
Board of Commissioners to take the
job.
“This announcement was made
without any explanation at all, but
of course I presume you have had
just cause for your action. Therefore,
I call upon you to give the reasons,
publicly, why Mr. Huntley was dis
charged. As a tax payer and voter
and being deeply interested in the
good government of our County, I
feel it is only my right to askithis
and your duty to explain it to us all.
Lacking all explanation for your ac
tion, any number of guesses may be
made, but in justice to Mr. Huntley
himself, you owe it to him and the
people at large to say w'hy he was
discharged.
I do not know Mr. Huntley very
well, but I have always found him
most obliging, courteous and ready to
help any time I go into his office. I
understand that he has made a good
collector and has run hia office effi
ciently. In these disquieting days, I
believe we should keep an honest,
pleasant and efficient man in such an
important office. I have no fault to
find with the gentleman who is pro
posed to take over the job, but I
must point out he was elected by the
people of Moore County to be a Com
missioner and not a Tax Collector,
and therefore I hope he continues in
hi.s present position, as elected. With
out explanation from you, many of us
here cannot see w’hy such a capable
man should be fired and replaced by
anyone who has had no experience
at all in this difficult and important
position.
“Trusting you will give the people
of the County, who elected you to
office, the full explanation of your
recent action, and with my best re
gards for good County Government,
I am
Sincerely youra,
EUGENE C. STEVENS.”
SUPREME COURT RULES
AG.AINST CAPE FEAR R. R.
I Washington. Jan. 21.—(/f>)—The
Supreme Court today sustained an
: order of the Interstate Commerce
Commission fixing a division of rates
between the Cape Fear Railways,
Inc., and the Atlantic Coast Line.
The order covered a division of
joint interstate rates on shipments
to and from Fort Bragg, N. C., inter
changed at Fort Bragg junction.
Cape Fear Railways contended its
proportion of the division gave it
less than the cost of transportation
and amounted to confiscation in vio
lation of its constitutional rights.

“The Right to Live,” Warner
Brothers dynamic drama of triangu
lar love under the most unusual cir
cumstances, will be the attraction at
the Pinehurst Theatre, Monday, Jan
uary 28th, matinee and night. “The
Right to Live,” a powerfully emo
tional story based on the stirring
drama, “The Sacred Flame” by Som
erset Maugham, the author of ‘The
Painted Veil” and “Of Human Bond
age,” deals with an unusual romance
in which two brothers love the same
woman. Josephine Hutchinson, noted
for her work with Eva La Galliene in
the Civic Repertory Theatre, and who
recently made her screen bow in
“Happiness Ahead,” proves that she
is a master of screen craft as well
as of the stage. She is sure and di
rect, sincere and convincing at all
times, and shows great emotional tal
ent. George Brent’s quiet, unassum
ing manner and finished acting wins
the sympathy of the audience. Colin :
Clive, the distinguished English ac- ;
tor, displays his unusual talent in a |
most difficult role.
“David Copperfield,” the attraction
at the Pinehurst Theatre, Wednes
day, January 30th, matinee and
night. No finer performance has been
done on the screen than that of Fred
die Bartholomew as the young Dav
id-tender, sensitive and curious. W.
C. Fields’ Macawber is a picture
broadly painted, but withal lovable
and laughable. Edna May Oliver’s
cantankerous Aunt Betsy tops all
her previous achievements. Roland
Young’s Uriah Heep is superbly shad
ed and perfectly projected. Lennax
Pawle’s Mr. Dick combines lunacy
and wisdom with truly Dickensian
versatility. Other outstanding mem
bers of the cast are Lionel Barry
more, Madge Evans. Lewis Stone.
“Wings in the Dark,” tendei-ly im-
I'olding a romance between Myrna
Loy, stunt flyer, and Cary Grant,
aviator, punching it with sympathy
and climaxing it with tense excite
ment for a big thrill, will be the at
traction at the Pinehurst Theatre,
F'riday, February 1st, matinee and
night.
Taking a somewhat incredible cen
tral situation and making that situ
ation convincing, human, even inspir
ing, is a dramatic feat achieved in
this picture. Sympathies are aroused,
interest sustained and heart strings
pulled. Cary Grant, by an intelligent,
persuasive performance, rises above
anything he has ever done, and Miss
Loy adds to the laurels she garner
ed in “The Thin Man” and ‘Evelyn
Prenticc.” 'They are supported by an
excellent cast.
Hardy will be seen in their new com
edy, “The Live Ghosts."
“Uroadway Bill,” will be the at
traction at the Southern Pines Thea
tre, Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
January 31st, February 1, 2 with a
Saturday matinee. No little of the
film’s superb qualities can be attri
buted to the splendid performances
registered by Warner Beixter and
Myrna Loy in the two starring roles.
Baxter’s “Dan Brooks” is his finest
screen characterization since the
Cisco Kid in “In Old Arizona,” and
Miss Loy Is a delightful revelation, a
new and greater screen personality.
Together, as a romantic team, both
Baxter and Loy are near perfect.
The picture Is full of drama, pathos
and comedy. One of the thrilling se
quences of the story is a horse race
which, it may be honestly said, has
not been equalled on the screen. The
stars, are supported by a notable ag
gregation of players.
An added attraction will be the
latest Mickey Mouse “Two Gun
Mickey.”
