Every one wants to see clearly and well. Yet few people actually con serve and safeguard their eyesight. Not only do we use our eyes contin uously; we actually abuse them. This condition has existed for many years , and as a result, young people as well , as older ones suffer from eye and nerve strain. The Better Light-Better Sight, campaign has been inaugurated to 1 make the American people eye-con- I scious. It embraces the welfare of I the entire family and has the coop- ; eration of more than 18 industrial, { trade and professional groups. The coordination of these groups has brought together distinguished group of scientists, eyesight specialists, il luminating engineers, and other pro fessional and business men, The groups participating in the national promotion of this campaign include Better Vision Institute; f^ational Paint, Varnish, and Lacquer Associa tion; National Clean-Up, Paint-Up Campaign Bureau, Artistic Lighting Equipment Association; National Bu reau of Casualty and Surety Under writers; Edison Ellectric Institute; National Retail Dry Goods Associa tion; National Retail Hardware As sociation; National Retail Furniture Association; National Electrican Wholesalers Association; Illuminating Elngineering Society; National Elec- HOWAHD NORMAN Howard Norman and M. S. Rob ertson have been sent to Southern Pines by the Carolina Power & Light ; Company to conduct free home light- jing demonstrations. A Sight Meter, , the instrument that tells the exact I amount of light produced by daylight and artificial illumination, will be ! used in these demonstratioas. These ; instruments are fitted with a Pho- ' tronic Cell which accurately meas- j ures light and at the same time in- ; dicates the required amount needed I for any visual task. This service is 1 being given as a part of the Better ' Light-Better Sight activity in South- 1 ern Pines. trical Manufacturers Association; Westinghouse Lamp Company; and the General Electric Company. The campaign platform as outlined by this group is "Our eyes, plus correction | where needed, plus adequate light, i properly shaded an(i directed, plus' proper reflecting sut^aces on walls and ceilings, equal better sight." It is obvious from this platform that the correction of inadequate lighting facilities in the home, stove, or factory may possibly be made sim ply and inexpensively. First, ot course, is the examination by an op tometrist to ascertain whether or not eye strain is in* evidence; then the assurance that the proper bulbs are in use in lamps that are used for reading, sewing or other close vis ual tasks; all lamps should have shades, light in color and large enough to conceal the bulb, reflect ing surfaces should also be in light colors so as to provide the right re-1 flection of light rather than the ab-1 sorption, as is the case where dark :• surfaces are used. jj Much interest in this campaign has been in evidence here and a number oi prominent firms are cooperating. H ... ^ •• DO YOU KNOW— n That one-fourth of our young peo- ;; pie suffer from defective vision, Jj That if a child has to hold the book H he is reading closer than 14 Inches, Jj the chances are that his eyes are oe- H ing strained. The remedy is a visit JS to the eye specialist an^ better light. That eyes are slow to complain of their need for help. They are un- knowingly abused because they put ij up with poor seeing conditions for a long time before showing the et- tj feet. || That human beings are Jiuman see- || ing machines whose efficiency, wel- fare, behavior and happiness depend |j upon vision and light.
