The amendment to eliminate the sales tax altogether was lost, 10 to 34 votes; the amend ment to reduce the rate nom three to two per cent was lost, 13 to 31, af ter basic food had been exempted. Another removing the $10 limit ot sales tax on any one item lost; 4 to 31, and the amendment to take from the highway fund the equivalent of three percent on sales of gasoline, with no additional cost to the purchaser, the "diversion” of $1,630,000 of highway funds, was adopted, 24 to 18. The closeness of the vote on ex empting basic foods, 22 to 21, indicat- f^d that this might be changed, the exemptions eliminated, anywhere along the line, on first, second or third readings, or it might wait un til the bill goes to the House and then, as anticipated to conference. As it will finally be passed, the exemp tions are expected to be taken out, or, a bare possibility, the Hill liquor control bill might be enacted to fill in the existing gap, but not likely. to restore to State employees the 25 per cent of their salary taken in Ap ril, May and June, 1933, to balance the budget.
