The Woman's Club met at the
manse on Friday evening with Mrs.
C. A. Lawrence, Mrs. D. C. McGill
and Mrs. N. N. McLean as hostesses,
and with the civics department in
charge of the program. How one
group of women transformed their
town by planting zinnias was present
ed in an interesting way by Miss Uet-
tie Gschwind and Mrs. W. J. Camer
on. Mrs. W. D. Matthews gave a
reading on old-fashioned favorites of
the flower garden and Mrs. Laubscher
read an appropriate poem.
The club decided to hold a plant
exchange on Monday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. Laubscher. A com
mittee was named to select a prize
to be given to the student of Vass-
Lakeview high school making the
greatest improvement in his work in
English during this year, and Miss
Mary Beasley was elected treasurer
to take the place of Mrs. B. H. Wood,
resigned.
Following a delightful social hour,
the hostesses served refreshments. It
was regretted that Mrs. R. L. Oldham,
one of the hostess group, was unable
to b<i present due to illness in her
home.
Rev. C. A. Lawrence w'as confined
to his home by illness during the
week-end and was unable to fill his
appointment on Sunday. The Rev. E.
R. Green of Southern Pines conducted
the service in the Vass Presbyterian
church at 11:00 o’clock and brought a
message that was enjoyed by a large
congregation. A. M. Calhoun of the
school faculty met Mr. Lawrence’s
Cypress congregation at the morning
hour and made a talk that called forth
hearty praise. Mr. Lawrence is feel
ing better and it is hoped that he
will be able to attend to his duties
by this Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Oldham had as
their guests Sunday Mr. Oldham’s
mother, Mrs. G. E. Oldham; his broth
er, Jack Oldham, and the latter’s
daughter, all of Goldston. Mr. Old
ham, who has been ill for several :
weeks, is now able to sit up for thirty'

Rev. Dougald Monroe of Greenbank,
W. Va., stopped in Vass a short while
Friday morning to speak to friends as
he was returning to his home. Mr.
Monroe had been called to his old
home near Fort Bragg on Monday
by the death of his brother, Alex
Monroe, who was drpwned on Satur
day night when his car drifted into
Little River after stalling at a hill
near the banks. The body was recov
ered on Wednesday and the funeral
held on Thursday.
