M. Poteat Addresses Sen iors at Graduation on “What Is Education?” Twenty-four Seniors won their di plomas at Pinehurst High School last Thursday evening. After hear ing an able address by Dr. H. M. Po teat of Wake Forest College on "What Is Ekiucation,” the following were awarded the coveted pigskins; Misses Frances Ehrhardt, Dorothy Garrison, Mildred Greer, Dorothy Kellis, Una Lewis, Katie Lee Maness, Bertie Marie McKenzie, Catherine Rit ter, Evelyn Smith, Ruth Smith, Eileen Whelpley and Elizabeth Wiseman, and Myron Barrett, James Carter, Davis Currie, Joe Frye, Roger Frye, A. H. Garrison, Jr., Omar Garrison. Olive Kellis, Hector Lee, Eugene McKen zie, Donald Whelpley and Warren McKenzie. Miss Dorothy Garrison was vale dictorian of her class, and Miss Mil dred Greer salutatorian. Of the boys, James Carter made the highest aver age. The commencement program open ed on Monday night when the Rev. Mr. Fulton of Laurinburg delivered the baccalaureate sermon. The High School Glee Club and Charles Tem pleton of Fayetteville furnished the music, with Miss Katherine Blue at the organ. On Monday evening the pu pils of Miss Katherine Blue gave a recital, and Billy Viall again won the gold medal. Gold pins for music were awarded Bobby Viall and Vivian Cur rie. “The Golden Whistle” was present ed by the pupils of the Elementary School on Tuesday evening under the direction of Miss Katheririe Blue and the Elementary teachers. At the close of the operetta the Junior class pre sented “The Spider of Singapore" un der the direction of Miss Virginia Simkins. This was one of the most enjoyable programs of the week. The Rev. E. C. Ruffin of I^llerbe addressed the seventh grade on Wed nesday morning. County Superinteiiu- ent H. Lee Thomas presented certi ficates to 26 members of the class. Reading certificates and perfect at tendance were presented by Princi pal W. P. Morton. “Seniors at the Bar” was given by the Senior Class on Thursday evening under the direction of Miss Virginia Simkins. The Mrs. W’. S. Dunlop cash prizes were awarded to Virginia Smith and Jack Short. Frances Ehrhardt and Myron Barrett won the books pre sented by Mrs. Gertrude W. Tufts for the best work in dramatics. Dor othy Kellis and Joe Frye were award ed the T. C. Cheatham cash prizes for outstanding work in dramatics. Dorothy Garrison won a book for making the highest average for the four years of high school. Della Freeman won the medal and Helen Fields the prize offered by the auxiliary of the American Legion. Mildred Greer was awarded the U. A. R. American History medal. She also won the $10.00 cash prize tor the most valuable units. Mildred Greer and W. P. Morton, Jr., won the Leonard Tufts Loyalty medals. This is considered the greatest of all hon ors. The names of Mildred Greer and A. H. Garrison were inscribed on the high school athletic trophy for hav ing won the most points in the ath letic program. This honor also came to the seniors. The names of Eloise Wicker and James Morgan were in- fjcribed on the elementary athletic trophy. This honor also came to the third grade. Pinehurst had cne of its best school years. Higher standards of conduct and scholarship were main tained. The boys’ basketball jteam won the sportsmanship banner. Ordi narily good scholastic achievement implies that good attitudes and desir able habits are being fostered in a fcchool. These accomplishments are being made possible by a reasonable, cooperative and interested public, by % live parent-teacher organization, Imd by a sympathetic and school- minded Board of Education. Pine hurst is justly proud of its school. Mr. and Mrs. B^ank Seagroves of Laurinburg spent Sunday with Mrs. Dora Seagroves. Mrs. Aplin of New York City spent Sunday in Carthage with friends. She tendered a beautiful musical program at the Methodist Church on Sunday evening. Mrs. N. A. McKelthen, Mrs. Dan Carter, Misses Annie and Frances McKeithen attended the wedding of Miss Emily Richardeon and John Le- land in Southern Pines on Saturday. Mrs, E. H. Morton and young son Fmmett spent the week-end in Rae- ford with relatives. Mrs. C. T. Grier has returned from a visit in Shelter Island, N. Y. Mr. and Mrs. Alton Mclver and baby of New York City are visiting Mrs. R. G. Wallace and Mrs. Charles Cox. Miss Judith Wainer has returned home after a few days’ visit with friends in Charlotte. W. H. Griffin of Roxboro spent the week-end in Carthage with his fam ily- Mrs. Bill Sebasten is visiting rela tives in Wilmington. H. S. Muse has returned to New York City after a two weeks’ vaca tion with his parents Dr. and Mrs. R. L. Felton, Jr., spent Sunday in Fayetteville visiting rela tives. The Rev. W. S. Golden preached the baccalaureate sermon in Jones boro Sunday morning. Mrs. Thomas Walters returned to her home in Burlington i&st week af ter a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Dupree. Mrs. Minnie Hilton of Fredonia, N. Y., died at the home of her daughter. Miss Alletah Hlllon in Pinehurst, early ye:-!terday morning, after an illness of only one day. Mrs. Hilton had just recently come to Pinehurst to make her home with her daughter, after the death of her husband, Wil liam C. Hilton, about five weeks ago. Shock over the loss of Mr. Hil- to was thought to be one of the causes of her sudden death. Funeral services will be conduct ed Saturday in Fredonia. The body was accompanied north by Mrs. Char lotte Hilton Green of Raleigh, a daughter. Mrs. Hilton is survived by two daughters, Miss Hilton of Pinehurst and Mrs. Green of Raleigh; and one son, William C. Hilton of Fredonia. At the conclusion of the contest Mr. Addor addressed the pupils and among other things said: “I am pleased to see great improvement in the thought of these contests over the preceding years. Peace on earth and Christmas are linked together. Peace begins at home with obedience and is brought to school and carried throughout the world.
