Walker and son and daughter have returned to their home here after an extended visit at Sandy Lake, Pa., and a week's stay in Detroit. Mrs. Harold Fowler left Monday for Boston, Mass., having accompanied Mrs. Alice Bennett north. Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Cox of Creed- more were guests of the former’s brother and sister.in.law, the Rev. and Mrs. W. E. Cox on Thursday. Mrs. John Jordan will leave Sunday to join her husband in New York. Lyman De Berry has arrived from Mt. Gilead to make his home here for the present. Mr. De Berry is con nected with the Paul M. Van Camp Civil Engineering office. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hasty had as Miss Nettie Gschwind of Vass and William P. Parker of Raeford Route 2 were united in marriage last Fri_ day evening, the ceremony being per formed in the Methodist parsonage at Raeford by the Rev. B. F. Houston in the presence of a few relatives of the contracting parties. Mrs. Parker, the daughter of Paul Gschwind and the late Mrs. Anna Gschwind, was born and reared in Vass and is held in high esteem by all who know her. She taught for a num. ber of years but more recently has held a position as saleslady in Beas. ley’s Department Store here. Mr. Parker is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. G- B. Parker of the Rock, fish section and for some time has en. gaged in bridge construction. Mr. and Mrs. Parker are at home on route 2, Rockfish. Circle No. 1 of the Presbyterian Woman’s Auxiliary met on Wednesday afternoon of last week at the home of Mrs. Georgie McFadyen, with the chairman, Mrs. Loula Muse presiding, Mrs. Alex McPherson was program leader and the topic for the afternoon was “The Jews." Interesting facts concerning them were told by the leader and papers were read by Mrs. George McDermott and Mrs. W. G- Parker. Mrs. J. E. Snow, auxiliary president, urged the members to try tithing for one month, which the cir. cle voted to do. Julian McDougald of Washington, D. C., son of Alex McDougald of Ve nus, Fla., spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Tally and his grandmother, Mrs. Julia McDougald. Mr. McDougald holds a responsible position with an insurance company and on account of his health has been granted an indefinite leave of absence. Mrs. R. C. Thomas, who has been ill for a week, is slowly improving. I Dan McDonald, school janitor, is in Raleigh this week attending the State Janitors’ school. Mrs. J. M. Guthrie and children, J. M., Jr. and Carolyn, Misses Manda McPherson Helen Parker, Mary Dor is McPherson and Mrs. W. G. Park er left Monday for Montreat, where Mrs. Guthrie and Mrs. Parker will at tend the Woman's Conference. Dr. and Mrs. J. V. Turner have an- rounced the marriage of their daught er, Mary Frances, to Bruce Hight Tharrington on July 20, at Durham. Miss Turner and Mr. Tharrington taught in the high school at Camer on last year. They will make their home in Chapel Hill. Mrs. D. C. Mclver of Kings Park, L. I.. N. Y., and son Chandler Hill Mclver of Brentwood Hospital, N, Y., were guests Monday of Mrs. Loula Muse and Mrs. Jewell Hemphill. Mrs. G. M. McDermott and Miss Margaret McDermott spent Monday in Sanford. Mr. and Mrs. Arch McDougald of Hamlet spent Monday with Mrs. H. D. Tally and Mrs. Julia McDougald. Miss Virginia Graham, who is in training at Pittman's Hospital, Fay etteville, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Neill Graham of Route 1. Mrs. Atlas Phillips spent Sunday afternoon and night with her son, J. A. Phillips. Mrs. A. M. Hemphill and 4- M., II, after spending ten days with Mrs. Jewell Hemphill, returned to Vass Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Loula Muse, Mrs. M. D. Mc lver, Mrs. M. D. McN'jill, Mrs. Jewell Hemphill and Miss June Mclver Hem phill were in Greensboro on Wednes day. Mrs. Muse left for Montreat where she is a delegate from the Fay etteville Presbyterial to the Woman's Auxiliary Training school. A handsome oil painting of the camp of John C. Muse on Little Riv er, some 15 miles from town, execut ed by a Swiss artist, Mertz, was of deep interest to some of Mr. Muse’s artist friends last week. Mr. Mertz’ principal work is portraiture; he re- cently had an order from Gene Tun- ney to paint the portraits of his two sons. Instead of the usual preaching ser vice at the Baptist Church next Sun day evening a church program will be presented. The public is cordially invited. Mrs. Watson and children of Gold- ston were guests Sunday of Mrs. D. W. McNeill, Mrs. Watson’s sister. JACKSON SPRINGS The Rev. R. G. Matheson and son Douglas, accompanied by Mrs. B. W. Pujliam and her daughter Phoebe were visitors at the Mercer Hospital in Charlotte Friday where Mrs. Pul liam’s husband is recuperating from injuries received in a wreck some time ago. DIES AT AGE OF 96 j Mr. Wilburn of Cameron route 1, ■ died last week at the advanced age , of 96 years. His second wife was ' Mrs. John Black, aged 86 years, who j survives him. Funeral services were held at Free Will Baptist church, near Irwin, conducted by the Rev. M. D. McNeill of the Cameron Pres, byterian Church. Mr. Wilburn was a j Confederate soldier whose forebears ,were a remarkably lonj,.lived race, his father reaching the age of 108 years ' and his mother 105 years.
