The rays fall out a geometrji under his arm I a bee can create a six-sided wax' chamber that will fit perfectly with other combinations of cells, making a two-sided comb that is an example of geometri cal neatness and exactness. A man might be generous enough to concede that a bee may lead all other insect life in intelligence, but might be un willing to accept the idea of a comparison with the insect’s and the man’s higher thinking powers. The big pine tree out by the telephone pole is still another example of intelligence. It de pends entirely on itself for maintenance, knowing fhow to manufacture its owti living, in its own laboratory, which is more than a human being can do. We are living in a muddled condition in a muddled age, with a lot of serious things to think about. We don't need to worr.M about getting too civiliz ed when we have flung away Grains o! Sand more obliquely- and the increas ing shadows are growing long er. The heat of summer has j go much regard for law and fair- been dissipated. The late bl<wm- j ne^s with every nation prepar ing flowers feeling the stimu- tVio fnmniofo an. lus of the late rains and lower temperatures are making vigor ous growth in the gardens. Houses are coming to life. Shutters are opening here and there over the village. School children are returning from long vacations. Occasionally the smell of fresh paint is noticea ble, while things in general are faking on an air of being brush ed and swept. ing for war to the complete an nihilation of the aggressor if the time comes. So perhaps man in his conceit has not made much greater headway with his resources and talents than some of the other creatures. —H. K. B. A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE CLIMATE I Southern Pines was founded jupon sand, by grit and courage. Nature is a neat worker, ^^s been done these Reports show that North Carolina stands second in the birth rate. If our record for automobile killing is maintained, about five percent of those children are destined for slaughter. “In Newport, N. H., twelve skliers jumped on pine needles instead of snow—the best jump 31 feet.” We have an abundant supply of high grade pine straw though we’re a lit. tie short on altitude. EUREKA One of the local stores last week announced Virginia oysters for Au. gust 30. The Virginia oyster is con fident of an "r” in Orgust. A New York state visitor return, ing for the first time in over a doz_ en years remarked, when asked if she saw decided change in old friends and surroundings: "The peo ple haven’t changed so much. But you have no distances anymore. The trees and shrubbery have all closed in.” Efforts of planting have finally absorbed the idea of pine and oak barrens. wasting nothing, if left alone The leaves and faded plant life will soon begin to drop off, their mission fulfilled. If incorporat ed in the soil, many of the ele ments taken from the air and ground will be returned, if not destroj»ed by fire. Vvhen iL? wise and intelligent gardener calls his rake and spade into ac tivity he will see that all dying organic matter is promptly turn ed over underground, adding much needed * humus that is swept up in smoke by tons, over our too sterile soil each year. Aunt Della is the cinnamon queen of the kitchen. The pair were alone. “De trumpet soun’s with.in-a mah soul, ah ain’t got long to stay here,” came the wail from the dusky throat. Several tre. mendous chords from the piano reach ed her ears. A silence. Then began a series of runs and high treble notes. Another silence. Some more thunder, ous chords. Aunt Della swallowed her last note and hurled herself out the kitchen door, leaving everything to the “hants,” in her big hearted way. Her cry was heard. Help soon reached her. Her prisoner led her back into the house with reluctance. The big dog was at the piano, cover, ing the keyboard with his long reach, ears erect, as if pleased with his creation of harmony. What success they had in bringing up child ren is hard to tell. But they are not dependent on the old folks, relief, government assistance or encouragement from any other source. The whole family soon left, the younger ones voyaging out for themselves. They all drifted away. Bird authorities ^say they are winter residents of the West Indies, Mexico and South Amv-'rica, and will leave about the last of the month for warm er climates. Now a trip to the West Indies isn’t much of a jaunt for a man to give much concern. He has road maps, railroad schedules, boats that the navigated by* compass and radio, weather in formation that gives him every detail as to storm warnings or any condition of the atmosphere he might be interested in. If he flies, he flies under much the same condition. Before he sets out he makes a lot of extensive preparation and depends on a variety of implements and knowledge from a number of other heads. The bird gives his wings a mere flap and sets sail. JHe arrives at precisely the point he had in view, and returns with the same accuracy and pre cision. Does the man know any more than the bird? In our con ceit we would quickly say, infi nitely, But do we? In the cypress post near the bird’s dwelling, some bees have found an opening for a home. In organization and intelligence a bee isn’t something to be classed as a numbskull. They have reached a high develop ment of brain and senses. With- throne. -H. K. B.
