North Carolina Page Sevet Exercises Open School Season in Carthage Larj;e Enrollment' on Opening Day Monday; Twenty Teach ers on Faculty The Carthage elementary and high schools opened Monday morning for the 1935.36 session with appropriate exercises in the high school auditor, ium. Superintendent O. B. Welch pre_ sided. The devotional exercises were conducted by the Rev. T. Sloan Guy. H .Lee Thomas, superintendent of county schools, was the speaker. His subject was “What Makes a Success, ful Student.” Listing as most lm_ portant and valuable character traits in the development of the Individual students as, obedience, honesty, in dustry, loyalty to school, the speak, er defined, each and concluded with a summary of these objections of pub. lie education assuring his audience that an effort to develop these char, acter traits would make the school proud of its Investment. Helms was found guilty of possessing and tran,sport!ng illegal liquor and his 30-day sentence was suspended upon payment of the costs of the case. Fred Branch, a co. defendant, was found not guilty. Neill Ray was given his choice of serving two months on the roads or i paying a fine of $50 and the costs on charges of public drunkenness, pos. session of illegal liquor and carry ing a concealed weapon.
