On Sunday before last, the blus tery day which followed a night of rain and wind, the lads reached Vass. By that time their shoes were much the wcrsq for wear, and as they wan dered around the town, they sighted several pairs of perfectly good look ing shoes inside a window of Beasley's Department Store, and the big glass I window was temptingly cracked. I R. P. Beasley, owner of the store, also owns a roadside station known I as Carolina Inn, located several miles south of Vass on Highway 1. He was there when four boys passed by, carrying new shoes which w’ere un wrapped. Upon returning to his place in Vasii Mr. Beasley saw that shoes were missing from his store window, so ; within a short time he got in touch ' I with an officer and they caught up ; i with the boys and gave them a lift, in the opposite direction from which ! they were traveling. They were lodg ed in the county jail and their par ents were notified. SOUTHEKN PINES Baptiat Church Rev. J. Fred Stimson, Pastor. 10:00—Sunday Srhool. 11:00—Morninir worship, 7:90—B. Y. P. U. On last Friday night the Federal Housing address by Miss Maud Har ris, from headquarters in Greensljoro, proved very instructive and the too small audience assembled found the speaker not only interesting but per sonally most charming. Her explana tion cf the subject was clear and she broadened into the need for real homes in the State and the need of real taste in the homes; not the dec orator’s good taste, but the simple touches of individuality that cost so little but mean so much. At the close of Miss Harris’ paper, Miss Adaline Cook, Civic Club presi dent stepped forward and sang two verses of "Home, Sweet Home.” Miss ■%,’ook is the dean of Southern Pines vocalists WJ' endowment and exper ience and it is always a treat to have her .spontaneously stop onto a pro gram, She was accompanied by Mrs, Smilie, who also blended a splendid alto with Miss Cook’s clear soprano on the choruses. Following was a short program cf the All-States Association: Mrs, D, H. Turner with a recitation and Mrs, R. T, Mills with soprano solos, accom panied by Mrs. Williams, delighted ths audience.
