Clegg Memorial Late Attorney “of Di.stinf^uished Lineage Written Large in His tory of Moore County A beautiful memorial on the life and character of Luther Bynum Clegg, written by E. J. Burns, W. D. Matthews and J. Talbot Johnson as a committee representing the Moore County Bar, was adopted in Superior Court last week and spread on the minutes. “On the 20th day of February, 1936, at Moore County Hospital the Bar Association of Moore County suf fered the loss of one of its most pop ular members in the death of L. B. Clegg when he died of a complication of diseases. He had been stricken on the previous Saturday evening as he was preparing for the night," the me morial begins. "Luther, as he was affectionately known by his fellow members of the County Bar, was of distinguished lin eage and the names of his forbears are written large in the history of Moore county . . . “The deceased was not only born in this county but spent practically his entire life here, contributing his ef forts to the best interests of Carth age, Moore county and the State of North Carolina,” the writing says in part. Many Cases Settled in February Term of Superior Court at Carthage Mrs. Elizabeth Hewitt of Southern Pines was last week in Superior Court awarded judgment against R. G. Mor rison and Thomas Morrison, III, in the sum of .$7,000 in a compromise settlement of a case growing out of the death of her young son, John Vernon Hewitt. Hewitt, a popular youth of Southern Pines, was instant ly killed on a street in Southern Pines when the bicycle upon which he was riding was struck by a motor vehicle driven by Thomas Morri.son, III. The defendants were to pay the costs of the action. It was ordered that Bertha Sanders recover of the Maryland Casualty Company the sUm of $749, this being the balance due her husband on a judgment of $1,050 awarded him by the North Carolina Industrial Com mission for injuries received as an employee of the Standard Mining Company of this county. The plaintiff alleged that she and her children had been deserted by the husband, John L. Sanders, and that prior to the time when he abandoned them he had signed a paper asking that the weekly installment of $7 paid from this fund be turned over to her. The couit having entered a final decree adjudging the liquidation and winding up of the affairs of the Pag« Corporation, it was ordered that the corporation be di.ssolved. Other cases were; J. This collection of 150 prints reproduced directly from orig inals is the most artistic exhibit ever displayed here. The originals of these are on display in world famous gal leries, The prints are for sale and the school will receive twenty-five per cent of any pictures that are sold, nl addition to the enjoyment In the col lection the patrons greatly assisted the school In raising a fund for the purchase of pictures for the school. Baptist young people are rehears ing an Easter program which they play to give at 11 o’clock on Easter Sunday morning. Miss Mary Beasley is in charge. "God’s Candles” is the title of an Easter pageant to be presented in the Vass Methodist church on Easter Sunday evening at the regular church service hour. Around twenty-five young people will take part in the pageant and a chorus of young wo men and men will lead a short scng service preceding the pageant. Miss Elolse Brooks underwent an operation In the hospital of Drs. Lilly, McKay and Jordan In Fayetteville on last Friday and Is getting along nice ly. Her mother, Mrs. G. W. Brooks, Is with her and her sister, Miss Jes sie Brooks of iVllson, visited her there during the week-end. Matthews in the Lee County Hospital, where he is recovering from a heart attack which he suffered last week. Dr. Mat thews will have to remain in bed for several weeks, it is said.
