Frank Hare of Jonesboro will fill his last appointment as pas tor of the Vass Baptist Church at the 11:00 o’clock hour this Sunday morn ing- On account of failing health, Mr. Hare has tendered his resignation to become effective the first of Novem ber. Mrs. B. H. Wood was hostess to the Presbyterian Auxiliary at its Oc tober meeting Tuesday afternoon, at which time an interesting program on “Where Christ Has Led in Lands Afar” wat. presented under the lead ership of Mrs. W. D. McCraney. Mrs. D. C. McGill conducted the Bible study. The hostess served a salad course at the conclusion of the meet ing- At the district meeting of the State Federation of Woman’s Clubs held in Aberdeen on Wednesday of last week, the Vass club had the dis tinction of receiving mention as be ing the only club in the ninth dis trict which had paid its full quota to the General Federation Founda tion Fund. The Club was also award ed a gavel by Mrs. J. Talbot Johnson for having had the best attendance according to miles traveled at the 1935 district meeting in Godwin. Members of the Vass club who at tended the meeting in Aberdeen were Mrs. W. J. Cameron, Mrs. G. W. Griffin, Miss Mary Beasley, Mrs. H. C- Callahan. Mrs. C. J. Temple, Mrs. W. D. Matthews, Mrs. H. A. Borst, Mrs. C. L. Tyson and Mrs S. R. Smith. Mrs. C- L Calcote, Mrs. Sarah Mar garet McNeill Mrs. Ben H. W'ood and Mrs. N. N. McLean attended the group conference of Fayetteville Pres- terial at Culdee church near Eastwood Friday. They were accompanied by W. D. Smith. “Here Comes Charlie” is the title of a three-act farce-comedy which is now being rehearsed for presentation In the Vass-Lakeview School auditor ium on Friday evening, November 6. Some of the outstanding local talent has been lined up for this perform ance, which bids fair to be one of the best productions staged here in many moons. C- L. Tyson, one of the town’s stage favorites, will play the comedy role of “Uncle Alex Twiggs,” *n old hill-billy from the Ozarks. Mrs. T. J, Smith attended the Pres- byterial group conference in Hemp Thursday. Mrs. A. M. Cameron and Miss Ruth McNeill spent Friday night and Sat- artlay in Raleigh. Jap Blevins went to Florida last week for a short stay- SCHOOL SOCIAL ACTIVITIES THEME OF CARTH.\GE P. T. A. The Carthage P. T. A. held its sec ond meeting of the current school year Monday in the high school au ditorium, with the theme “Social Activities in the High School” as the main topic for discussion. This idea was splendidly presented from the student angle, by two seniors. Miss Virginia Scott and Francis Wilhoit. At the conclusion of their talks, H. Lee Thomas and O. B. Welch present ed the same topic from the angle of the teacher's viewpoint. The girl's quartette, composed of Misses Anne Golden, Flora Cox, Mayo Jenkins and Lamar Spencer gave a delightful musical selection. The song, “America the Beautiful" was sung in unison by the assembled parents and teachers. It was announced that Miss Virginia Brown's fourth grade had won the attendance award for last month. It was also voted, at this meeting, to let country mothers, who attend the P. T. A. meetings from a long distance, count as two, in mak ing up the attendance averages.
