THE PILOT, Southern Pines and Aberdeen, North Carolina Page Thre* The Week in Vass A Christmas service featured by a pageant will be given in the Vass Methodist Church at 7:30 o'clock this Sunday evening, December 20. The offering will be for the benefit of the Methodist orphanage in Ral eigh. The public is cordially invited to attend the service. On Monday evening, Dec. 21, at 8:00 o’clock, a pageant, “The Bethle hem Inn,” in which about thirty-three young people will take part, will be presented in the Vass Presbyterian Church by members of the Vass and Manley congregations. A free-will offering for ministerial relief will be made. All are invited to be present for this pageant. On Tuesday evening, December 22, the December meeting of the Vass Methodist Auxiliary will be held at the home of Mrs. C. J. Temple. “Home Ties,’’ a delightful rural comedy in four acts, was presented in the Vass-Lakeview school auditorium on last Friday evening by local high school talent, end was well received by those present. In the cast were Gladys Causey, Jessie Thomaa. Rebec ca Gardner, Frances Bailey, Betty Blevins, Connor Cole, Bill Coore, Lin- wood Keith and Harold E'i.hfwood. Mrs. R. G. Rosser was hostess to the Presbyterian Auxiliary at its De cember meeting. Mrs. r>. C. McGill was leader of an appealin'^ program on ministerial relief, and she also conducted tli3 Bible study Plans for dispensing Christmas cheer to shut- ins were made. Tyson spent Sunday in Lex ington. Mrs. F. W. Taylor and Miss Louise Leslie were Raleigh visitors Saturday. Miss Ruth McNeill of Hemp was the week-end guest of Mrs. A. M. Cameron. Miss Catharine McMillan of Ral eigh visited her father and sister, N. A. McMillan and Miss Myrtle McMil lan, recently. Misses Ernestine and Themla Cox of Sanford were week-end guests of Miss Edna Boyd at Hotel Charmella. Mrs. Bertie L. Matthews and Mrs G. W. Brooks attended the funeral of Archie Cole at Buffalo church near Sanford on Thursday of last week. Miss Eunice Setzer of Farmer, a former teacher in the Vaas-Lakeview high school, was a guest at Hotel Charmella during the week-end. Dr. J. F. McKay and Miss Martha McKay of Buies Creek spent Satur day at the home of Mr. and Mrs- A. M. Cameron. Mrs. W. D Matthews of Southern Pines spent a day last week with her aunt, Mrs W J Cameron. Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Gtaham and Miss Catherine Graham spent Satur day in Raleigh. Bernice Graham, who is a student at State College, return ed with them and spent Sunday at home. Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Day of New Yorli to Conduct Sale of Property I On Young’s Road i CECIL SHORT OF EUREKA SECTION DIES; ILL A YEAR Funeral services for Cecil Short of Carthage Route 3 were conducted at Culdee Presbyterian Church last Thursday afternoon by his psistor, the Rev. R. G. Matheson. Mr. Short had been in poor health for over a year, suffering from tu berculosis. Surviving are his widow, the for mer Miss Mary McNeill, and the fol lowing sisters and brothers: Mrs. C. C. Hunsucker of Hemp. Mrs. Frank McKenzie of Carthage. TO DISC USS OLD AGE PENSION PLAN SUNDAY The attention is called to all per sons interested in the Townsend Re covery Plan and Old Age Pension proposition, that there will be a meet ing next Sunday afternoon, December 20th. in the assembly room of the li brary at Niagara at 3:00 o’clock. All persons, young as well as old, are invited. The Walter S. Halliwell estate on Youngs Road, Southern Pines, is to be sold at auction on Saturday of this week. The sale, which is adver tised as an “absolute auction,” is scheduled for 2:00 p. m., with Joseph P. Day of New York City as the auc tioneer. The estate comprises 258 acres, with a fine residence, private gym nasium, swimming pool, six-car ga rage, stables and farm buildings. The house, surrounded by gardens, lawns and shade trees, with the swimming pool close by, contains about 12 rooms, with numerous sleeping por ches. There are gate houses at eachi of the two entrances from Youngs Road, and the property has its own water tower. Mr. and Mrs. Halliwell made their winter home here for several years, but the estate has been unoccupied for the past few seasons. It adjoins the property of Mrs. Reid Healy and Stanley W. Burke. LOCAL SCHOOL REPRESENTED AT ATHLETIC CONFERENCE Delegates from Southern Pines to the High School Girls’ Athletic Con- fei'ence held at the Women’s College of the University of North Carolina on Saturday, December 5, were Ruth Swett, Bonnie Barnum, Joan Spring, Mildred Powell and Mae Belle Ward. They were accompanied by Miss Alice Todd, high school grl’s athletic direc tor, and Mrs. J. J. Spring, who mo tored the party to Greensooro and I back. The program, which was held in the Women’s College Gymnasium, consisted of games in which all dele gates were given an opportunity to partake. There were open discussions on the value of athletics, and on the problems of each athletic association from which there were delegates pres ent. The entire day was designed for i the purpose of enlarging the athlet- I ic program for high school girls.
