Following his success in “Come
anti Get It,” Edward Arnold again
is cast in a rugged and powerful
dramatic role in “John Meade’s Wo
man," the attraction at the Pinehurst
Theatre Monday, January 11th, mat
inee and night. Once more he is the
ruthless lumber magnate, a financial
tycoon who forces all who come In
contact with him to bend their knees. ■
Though Edward Arnold, famous for |
his characterizations in “Diamond ^
' Jim” and “Come and Get It” is nat-1
urally a dominating figure, he is sur- ^
rounded by a highly capable cast in-1
eluding the famous stage star, Fran-1
cine Larrimore and George Bancroft. |
recently seen in “Mr Deeds Goes To
Towti.” j
Lily Pons not only displays her
world-famed soprano voice in a mel- ^
odic variety from “swing” tunes to
grand opera in her new melody com
edy, “That Girl From Paris,” the ^
attraction at Pinehurst Wednesday, |
Jan. I3th, matinee and night, hut
proves to be a captivating comedien
ne, holding her own with such mas- [
ters of humor as Gene Raymond and
Jack Oakie, with whom she is co-.
starred. Miss Pons plays the role of
a noted opera diva who finds fame j
hollow compensation for her operatic ^
efforts and flees to a strange land

in pursuit of a handsome American
musician with whom she’s fallen in |
love. “That Girl From Paris” is rich
in music and comedy, is a swell blend- ^
ing of song and fun. '
Exciting comedy is the element se
lected as the essence of “Mind Your,
Own Business,” the attraction at
Pinehurst Friday, January 15th, mat- ^
inee and night. To that end, the film
will present a new comedy team,
Charles Ruggles and Alice. Rr«i<ly,
certainly not unknown as indi
vidual comics. Ruggles is pre
sented as a hen-pecked husband and
Miss Brady is certainly a natural se
lection for his wife who is responsi
ble for most of hia troubles. Situa
tions and dialogues are pointed solely
to evoke wholesome laughter. j
At Southern Pines !
It is always a pleasure to announce I
the coming of a George Arliss produc
tion, and it is especially true of his ,
latest picture, “Man of Affairs,”
playing a return engagement in Sou- j
them Pines Monday, Tuesday, Wed
nesday, Jan. 11, 12, 13, with a Tues
day matinee. George Arliss appears
in a dual role and the intrinsically
amusing story of a cabinet minister’s
bohemian brother posing as a pom
pous twin, and actually imposing on
the gathering of ministers. Arliss
never has acted with greater finesse,
a more acute sense of character or
more obvious enjoyment.
Madcap, hilarious and giddy, tune- |
ful, gay and gorgeous, is “College j
Holiday,” playing a return engage
ment at Southern Pines Thursday
and Friday, with a matinee Thurs-;
day. You can rate it right now as
the laugh hit of the season. Headed ^
by a half dozen of America’s great- ^
est fun makers, and supported by a
cast of brilliant specialty perform
ers, “College Holiday" sets a new
high standard in comedies with music
for Hollywood to shoot at. Jack Ben
ny. George Burns. Gracie Allen, Mary
Boland and Martha Raye are in ^
charge of the laughs. The love inter
est is maintained by Marsha Hunt,
Leif Erikson, Eleanore Whitney, |
Johnny Downs, Olympe Bradna and
Louis DaPron, with featured roles by
Ben Blue and Etienne Giradot. A
chorus of beautiful girls introduces
sprightly new dance routines. “Col
lege Holiday” is the story of a pair
of crack-pot cultists, played by Misa
Boland and Giradot, who take over a
bankrupt hotel, do it over into a
Roman garden, and there propose to
find out if it is possible to do away
with love. As an added attraction,
"Mickey’s Elephant,” a Mickey
Mouse.
