Ralph Leach Will Be in Charge of
New Shell Service Station and
Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Hotvlett of
Sanford Will Operate Cafe
Tomorrow, Saturday will witness the op
ening of the newest and largest service sta
tion in the Sandhills section- The new Pilot
Service Station in Aberdeen, located at the
intersection of highways Nos. 15 and 1, cele
brates its inaugural at that time.
Under the management of Ralph Leach,
known throughout the section as one of the
most popular of service station men, the Shell
Oil Company is opening this $25,000 dollar
station to the public with just pride in the
fact that this is one of the most modern and
up-to-date places of its kind in the two Caro-
linas. Mr. Leach has been in this business in
Aberdeen and Fayetteville for several years
and has built an enviable reputation for effi
cient service and fair dealing. He has install
ed the most modern equipment for rendering
complete one-stop service to the motorist. The
gas pumps are the latest models that measure
the gas you buy to the -tenth of a gallon. He
has provided his patrons with an indoor
greasing and washing rack insuring the same
quick, efficient service at all times, day or
night, regardless of weather conditions. Of
course Shell products will be featured; how
ever, a few items that the Shell Oil Company
does not manufacture will be sold here,
among these, Kelly Springfield tires. The Pi- .
lot station will render 24-hour service.
Opening at the same time as the gas bus-

iness at the Pilot station will be the cafe locat
ed in the same building and operated by Mr.
and Mrs. Howlett of Sanford, who also oper
ate the New Shell Lunch there. This affable
couple bring with them to Aberdeen a vast
background of successful experience in this
field. They have purchased for the Pilot ser
vice station the latest word in restaurant
equipment and fixtures. In keeping with
the general architecture of the building they
have provided all the fixtures in colonial ma
ple- A lunch counter, tables, and booths offer
the diner any style of comfort that he may
desire. Regular dinners, short orders and
sandwiches may be obtained here. However,
the present feature will be “blue-plate” lun
ches. The business motto will be “Best food
obtainable at prices that you can afford to
pay.” Ample parking space has been provided
on all sides of the building so curb service
will be yours for the asking, (or yours for the
tooting of your horn). Mr. and Mrs. Howlett
have provided every convenience for the com
fort of their guests, among these, a ladies’
lounge, rest rooms with both hot and cold wa
ter, and no doubt at tim.es there will be mus
ic provided for diversion.
The ti’ansformation of the atti’active
former home of the Carolina Discount Cor
poration into this zenith in service station ar
chitecture is due in a large measure to the un
tiring labors of Joe Wilkinson, the building
superintendent of the Quality Oil Company of
Winston-Salem, of which this station is a
unit. The Quality Central Oil Company of
Candor, of which A. R. Carlan is manager, is
the Shell distributor for this section.
