A C.KNTLKWOMAN
Editor, The Pilot:
There is a fragrant little flower
that grows in the Sandhills and blos
soms often before the fiosts of Win.
ter give grace to the dews of Spring
time. One little whiff of this drli-
cious perfume carries our minds
swiftly back to a comm\mity that
was once our world and to a people
whose influence laid out for us a
pattern for life that we would not
change if we could and could not if
we would.
This fragrant little "trailing ar.
butus” reminds us of the modest
kind and generous neighbors who
composed our childhood world.
On the 26th of March we attend
ed the funeral at Union Church of
one of those old neighbors, our kins
woman Mi.ss Ada McNeill. She, a
*
sister and two brothers were left
fatherle.ss when quite young. But the
responsibilities and perhaps hard
ships only deepened the refined gen
tility and kindness of thier hearts.
We cannot recall that Ada ever mur
mured at anything. Always her face
wore the happy smile of contentment
(ind her manner bore the poise of a
gentlewoman.
No person or aninipl ever suffer
ed around her if it >\-as in her power
to relieve them. We have seen a.s
many as a dozen stray cats and dogs
around her home because her gener.
ous and sym^ithetic nature could
not bear to see them suffer for food.
Ada McNeill was not known far
from home, but she had in her
character the virtue that could ter
minate all wars, quell all riots, set at
liberty all slavery and bring peace
and happiness to all peoples in every
nation. That one virtue is kindness.
Because she was kind others will be
kind, and generou.s and helpful.
This is the kind of influence that
had its beginning in Jerusalem, that
passed out through Samaria and unto
the utteimost years of the earth.
