Somehow the enthusiasm for this work has infected everyone and the eager Inquiries of "How much did you make” testify to the in tense interest of the public. It is with joy that the committee announces the results of Tag Day in Southern Pines: $130.20. Of this sum, $10.00 was given by the Chris tian Science Society; $5.00 was a do nation from Mrs. Leonard Tufts. West Southern Pines raised $24.65 through the following organizations; The Holiness Church, $5.25; the Free Will Baptist Church, $7.25; the First Baptist Church, $7.20, The West Southern Pines School, $4.65. The rest of the amount came from the people of Southern Pines. On behalf of Mrs. Frank McCluer, chairman of the Southern Pines Com mittee and for my own sake as vice- chairman of the County Committee, I vvould like to thank the people of Southern Pines one and all for their generous support of this work. I would like also to thank the Girl Scouts for their efficient, attractive, and cheerful services as tag-sellers. We are very grateful, too, to those who made posters for us; Mrs. Strat ton, Miss Yeomans, and the faculty of Mrs. Hayes’ School, and to the merchants whose lovely window dec orations advertised this work and en couraged its support as nothing else tould. Incidentally we wish we could do this again nexf winter during tourist time. We think our visitors would be much impressed to see how extraordinarily pubi'c-spirited our merchants are. It was to us quite an exciting thing to see the eagerness with which these busy men and wo men cooperated to make this cam paign a success. W’e would also like to thank, es pecially, The Pilot, and the other newspapers of the county, for their help. It was felt by all that the splen did publicity given to the cause con tributed largely to its success. Free press publicity is too often regard ed as a right by charitable organiza tions. We do not forget that it is not free, that it costs the pape” just Fo many dollars and cents to print it, and we are deeply grateful for these contributions throughout the year. Finally, may I say that this grat itude comes, through us, from the mothers and babies helped by this work? They are the really grateful ones. We only wish that everyone who contributed last Saturday could see at first hand the results of their generosity, so that they might share with us, to the utmost, the joy of feeling that one has helped just a little to make life happier and bet ter for someone. i A report of the results of Tag Day in other towns of Moore county will be given when all the returns have been reported. Ark School Closes A Successful Year earn Pupils See Motion Pictures of Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition The Ark SchcKil in Southern Pines closed last Thursday afternoon after a very busy season, and many pleas ing events were crowded into the fin. al two weeks of the term. They in cluded the showing of motion pictures of the second Byrd Expedition to the South Pole by Capt. Alan-Innes-Tay- lor, a member of the expedition; a re cital by m'imbers of the school's mu sic club for their parents, and the Nature Club’s picnic and exhibition of collections made by the members during the year. A tennis party under the direction of Eklw^ard King and Donald Sherrerd cf Pinehurst was held last week, those playing in the singles and doubles matches being Nancy Boyd. Pegggy Ewing, Cvnthia Osbom, Mary Jane French, Pauline Nichols, Sewell Weeks, Sandra Zelie, Lewis Haynes, Dick Erhardt and George Pulver. A short assembly was held last Wed nesday followed by sports events for the older children. The Ark will re open on Monday, October 7th. Mrs. Mllllcent A. Zanuck has incorporated the wealth of ele ments out of which production ex- pei»encie spells entertainment—gla mour. song, costume brilliance, fa mous names and places and action. The adaption of the autobiographical material for a .supportmg ca.st head ed by Edward Arnold, Henry Fonda and Don Ameche, gives a basis for able performances of parts of Dia mond Jim Brady, Alexander Moore, Tony Pastor and Jesse Lewisohn and Edward Solomon. William Warren Is there as Jesse Lcwisolm, and Leo Cor. rillo as Tony Pastor. Nigel Bruce end Claude Allister protray Gilbert and Sullivan; Weber and Fields as themselves. Lavishly produced and abounding in outstanding perform ances, this playback of a notable era and about a famous stage perscn-Uity combine.'? all the e.s.sentials of perfect entertainment. And then comes Gloria Jean, the captivating mi.ss of the silvery pipes, so well remembered for her first screen appearance in “The Under, pup." supported by no less a person age than Bing Crosby, in “If I Had My Way,” the attraction at South ern Pines Wednesday and Thursday, May 29. 30, with a Thursday matinee. The teaming of these two song birds is a ten-strike in smart casting and the resultant feature has much to of fer customers of all ages and tastes; with a bonus for the oldsters w'ho will enjoy a nostalgic thrill through the appearances of Blanche Ring, Ed die Leanard and several other old times whose stars shone brightly dur ing the golden era on the "theatah.” The attraction at Southern Pines for Friday and Saturday, May 31st and June 1st, with a Saturday mati nee is Thorne Smith's “Turnabout,” and those who read this novel a few years ago or recently, need only to be told that the picturization follows the Smith story closely, to know the odd and venturesome nature of this comedy. Thorne Smith is also author of the famous “Topper” stories which made such hilarious pictures. The cast includes Adolphe Men- jou, Carole Landis,' John Hubbard, William Gargan, Veree Teasdale, Mary Astor, Donald Meek, Joyce Compton, Inez Courtney, Franklin Pangbom and Marjorie Main to men. tion but a few of the fun makers. An added attraction is the special subject, “Cavalcade of Academy Awards.” presenting for the first time the winners of these awards from the first year and introducing such stars as Emil Jannings, G«orge Arlis, Lionel Barrymore, Frederic March, Clark GaWe, Paul Muni, Spencer Tracy, Janet Gaynor, Mary Pickford, Norma Shearer Marie Dressier, Helen Hayes, Katherine Hepburn, Claudette Colbert, Shirley Temple, Bette Davis, Louise Rainer, Vivien Leigh and Robert Donat.
