Judge Burney Orders 4 To Jail for Perjury Find.s Witnes.ses Not Speaking the Truth in Testimony in Worthy Case Charged with committing "corrupt and willful perjury" Steve Worthy, Julia Brown, Helen Worthy and Nan nie Mae Dowdy, witnesses in the case of State versus Colin Worthy, were Tuesday afternoon at the order of Judge J. J. Burney committed to jail in default of $1,000 bond, each, to await trail at the next term of criminal court. The Judge's action came as a surpri.se to the principals and created somewhat of a sensa tion throughout the courtroom in Carthage. Judge Jburney, who was commis sioned by Governor Broughton to pre- Fide over Moore's term of criminal court after it was learned that Judge Frank M. Arm.strong would be una ble to be present, had warned his hearers on the opening day of court against making false statements, and that he meant what he said was soon made evident. Judge Bumey sent to Manley for J. R. Comwell and L. D. Hancock, young men whom the Worthy and Dowdy girls claimed to have been out with on a certain night, and after ques tioning them the perjury charge was held under $500 bond each. "Clean up or close up” was the ultimatum. The result*, we feel, speak for themselves. To date, 142 retail beer licenaees have been elim inated because they used their permit* to shield illegal activities. Thus are being removed the bad spots that, left alone, would ignore the high standard of conduct demanded by public senti ment and by the legalized beer industry.
