Corp. Joseph P. O’Callaghan of
the 252nd Coast Artillery has just
received his honorable discharge from
the U. S. Army after serving fcr 12
months and 16 days and is now again
in Southern Pines, associated with
his father, L. V. O'Callaghan.
Mr. and Mrs. George Hyde Bour-
quart of Mendham, N. J., are spend
ing several weeks at the New Eng
land House enroute to Daytona, Fla
They are enjoying the good golf
courses in this vicinity.
Mrs. Inez Brown of New York ar
rived last Friday to stay with her
son, Joseph Lee Brown, and Mrs.
Brown.
Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Waterman have

where they spent the summer.

The Pine Needles this week contin
ued to be a meeting place for many
Army officers and privates stationed
in this vicinity and for their rela
tives coming to visit them.
Major Ray Perkins—known to
screen and radio fans as just "Ray
Perkins"—was not only a guest but
an impromptu entertainer with sev
eral piano selections. Among those
most impressed bv the Major, now
with First Army^leadquarters, was
little Betsy Coxe, daughter of Capt.
and Mrs. Henry B. Coxe, Jr., of
Penlyn, Pa.
Among guests also were Major
and Mrs. Jay Cooke of Philadelphia,
the Major having been chairman of
the Philadelphia Republican Commit
tee before joining the 11th infantry
of the 28th division.
Other newcomers included Mr. and
Mrs. J. Brook Lessig of Pottstown,
Pa., who entertained Lieut. Col. Fred
H. Kelly and their son, Lieut. Brook
Lessig of the 28th division; Dr. and
Mrs. John Maher and daughter, Mad-
lyn; Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Robertson,
M. Duane Whitney of New Jersey;
Dr. Maher is chief surgeon of Ma-
mouth Memorial Hospital, Long
Branch, N. J. Also, Brig. Gen. Eric
Fisher Wood from Fort Bragg, prom

first convention of the year and it
will last throughout the week, with
about 400 people attending.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl G. Thompson,
Jr., were called to Raleigh Monday
by the death of Mrs. Thompson’s
grandfather, E. L. Harris. Funeral
services were held Tuesday. Mr. Har
ris was a native of Granville County,
N. C., and had made his home in
Raleigh for more than 50 years.
