Stevens Heads Canteen Corps The Southern Pines Canteen Corps met Tuesday afternoon at the Civic Club at a meeting called by Mrs. E. V. Hughes, chairman. Mrs. Hughes resigned from the chairmanship be cause of the press of other duties, and Mrs. Eugene C. Stevens was elected to fill this place. Grey, who has been church organist for 15 years and is now retiring from that post. The group presented Mrs. Grey with a lovely gift. Bridge snd rummy were playfed, followed by a social hour. Mrs. L. G .Chatfield have returned to their home in Knoll wood after spending the summer at Nantucket, Mass. Mrs. Carl G. Thompson and Mrs. Clara A. Scott returned Wednesday night from a trip to Atlanta, Ga., where they visited Mr. Thompson’s daughter, Mrs. Joseph Lee Brown. Mrs. Edna Hayes and son, Ray mond, returned Sunday after vaca tioning for two weeks at Myrtle Beach, While there Ross Grey visited them for a few days. Corporal Harold Fowler returned to Fort Bragg Monday after spend ing a 10-day furlough with his fam ily here, and at Blowing Rock and Norman. He has just recently been promoted to corporal and is with the 4th training regiment, F,A,R.C. Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Golden of Fayettcvill? w-ere visitors in town last week-end, Lieut. Robert C. Ray was confin ed to his home here for several days this week while recuperating from a minor operation which he underwent Wednesday at the Post Hospital at Fort Bragg. Mr. and Mrs. Westcott Clinton and small daughter, Diane, of Philadel phia, Pa,, arrived last week and are staying at present with Mrs, J, M, Wyndham on S. Ashe street. Mr. Clinton will enter the Army in the near future and Mrs. Clinton and Diane will make their home here while he is receiving Officers’ Train ing, Mrs. Clinton is the former Miss Mary Jane Woodward, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Woodward. Mr, and Mrs. R, F. Tarlton and children, Richie and Jane, spent last week-end at Myrtle Beach with Mrs. Tarlton’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Chandler. The Tarltons returned Sunday night and the Chandlers re turned Monday after spending a week at the beach. Lieut. Col. Severn T. Wallis spent several days here this Week with Mrs. Wallis and the children. Mr. and Mrs. Burton J. Ray of Franklin, Va., arrived Thursday night to visit their son and daught er-in-law, Lieut and Mrs. Robert C. Ray. Mr. and Mrs. W, H. Fitzgerald and Miss Molly Fitzgerald of Columbus, Ohio are visiting Lieut, and Mrs. Edward Fitzgerald. Mrs. Lawrence Ryder, III, and young son, Larry, and Miss Cecelia Ryder of West Orange, N. J., arriv ed Monday for a visit at the home of Mrs. Harold Tate on Page street. Mrs. Ryder was formerly Miss Marie Hall of Pinebluff. Members of the Women’s Auxili ary and the men of Brownson Me morial Presbyterian Church met Wednesday night in the Fellowship Hall of the church for supper. At the joint meeting afterwards Major H. V. Carson, Chaplain at Knollwood Field spoke on “Loyalty.'’ Mr. and Mrs. R. S. DuRant and sons, Dick and Bob, of Tryon, N. C.. were visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Howard N. Butler last Sunday. Dick has just completed his Naval Aviation training at Clarksville. Tenn., and is awaiting further orders. Miss Marjorie Jellison, who is at tending Business School in Raleigh, spent last week-end with Mr. and Mrs. Howard Burns. A1 Yeomans has returned after spending several weeks in Banner Elk, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene C. Stevens have returned from a vacation spent at Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Patterson have had as their guests Mr. Patterson’s sister, Mrs. W. J. Kirkland and her daughter, Mrs. Mary Ruth Johnson of Philadelphia, Miss., and Miss Flora Patterson of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Osborne Palmer left Tuesday for Charleston, S. Hunt Fisher, formerly of Southern Pines, made a brief visit here this week to see his mother, Mrs. Nellie Fisher, who was visiting PERSONALS Mrs. E. Levis Prizer. Lieut. Fisher is with the Army Engineers and has been stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va., but is now being assigned to a new post. His wife accompanied him to Rock Hill, S. C., her home, where she will remain while Lt. Fisher is on duty. His mother, Mrs. Fisher, whose other son, William, is Lt. Col. in the Air Forces, plans to make her home here this winter and is at present staying at the Dickinson apartment. Mr. and Mrs. David S. Packard of Ridge street have returned to South ern Pines after spending the early part of the summer in Schenectady, N. Y., with their daughter, Mrs. W. Jerome Smith. In* August and early September they vacationed at Rowe, Mass., where another daughter. Mrs Richard A. McLaughlin, and family visited them.
