North Carolina Page Seven In Carthage Circles Joint Church Meeting The Woman’s Auxiliary of the Presbyterian Church held a joint meeting with the Men of the Church on Monday evening at the Presbyter ian Church. Mrs. Chas. T. Grier pre sided and Mrs. Eldon S. Adams read the minutes. The following program was pre sented; Mrs. J. K. Roberts was lead er. Topic, “Reaching Every Person with Christian Teaching—in the Home, in the Church and in the Community.” Mrs. Chas. I'arringer conducted the devotional. Those as sisting on the program were: Mrs. Chas. T. Grier, Mrs. Myrton Stewart, Mrs. James E. Fraser, Mrs. Chas. Cox, and P. H. McDonald. The meet ing closed with the song “Onward Christian Soldiers.” Birth Announcement Born to Mr, and Mrs. Watt Lentz a son, Robert Lacy, at the Moore County Hospital on Sept. 7. Mrs. Lentz is the former Miss Mary Mc Cormick. Miss Mary Wycoff of Columbia, S. C., returned home Friday after spending ten days with her si&ter, Mrs. John Symington. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Davis of Sum ter, S. C., are visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Davis. Mrs. A. E. Woltz of Raleigh is spending sometime with Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur H. Currie. Miss Rutli Woltz of Raleigh spent the week end. Miss Betty Jane Seawel! left Wed nesday for Durham where she will enter Duke University. Miss Helena Blue arrived home Sunday night from Massachusetts, where she has been a counselor at a Girls Camp, in Falmouth and later went to a farm, “Peaceful Acres,” where a group of college girls work ed for one month gathering vegeta bles in truck-gardens. Miss Blu?' graduated last spring at W.C.U.N.C., and will leave this month for Selma to teach music in the High School. Book Reviewers Club The Carthage Book Reviewers Club was entertained by Miss Maida Jenkins at her home on Main street last Thursday evening. The home was throw’n ensuite and artfully dec orated with garden flowers. Mrs. Wilbur H. Currie presided and Miss Mildred Sinclair read the min utes. It W'as decided that the club would donate one dozen chairs to the Red Cross Chapter room. Miss Sincliar reviewed the book, “Mrs. Miniver,” by Jan Struthers. Mrs. Jrmes A. Davis and little Miss Sarah Jenkins assisted the hostess in serving a congealed salad course and assorted sandwiches -with an iced drink. Birth Announcement Mr. and Mrs. Duncan McCollum of Carthpge announce the birth of a son. Jack Eldon, Sunday, Sept. 6, at the Moore County Hospital. Mrs. McCollum is the former Miss Ollie McDonald of Cameron. Cpl. Ernest Muse of Fort Bragg spent Sunday w'ith his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alton Muse. Miss Anne Cameron of Southern Telephone 6161 J. N. Misses Sarah and Eleanor Hurwitz of Washington, D. C., are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abram Hurwitz. Mr, Hurwitz entered Duke Hospital Tuesday for treatment. Mrs. James L. McGraw and child ren. Miss Harriette McGraw and Lloyd, Jr., arrived home Saturday from Sullivan’s Island where they have spent the summer. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jones, Misses Ann Hollingworth and Ellen Royal Jones, and Ensign Dowell Jones of Cameron and U. S. Navy were dinner guests Monday evening of Mr. and Mr:,. Chas. T. Sinclair. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Schler and Miss Patty Schler of Augusta, Ga., spent the week-end with Mrs. Schler, Mrs. R. S. Shields. Miss Margaret Penn of Fort Bragg spent the week-end with her mother, Mrs. Margaret Graves Penn. On Friday Miss Caroline Frye en tertained the Sub-Deb Club at her home. The hostess served orange drinks with cookies and then the Club hiked to the theatre where they all enjoy ed a show. Those present were: Misses Dora Leigh Flinchum, Isabel McDonald, Mary Epps Wallace, Cam Willcox, Jane Whitlock, Betty Baker, Elizabeth Annie McDonald, Elizabeth Thomas Neal McDonald, the hostess and Mary Doris Cameron. The Rev. W. S, Golden and W. G. Caldwell spent three days this week attending Synod which was held at Queen’s College in Charlotte. Mrs. Holt McNeill returned home Saturday from Dobson where she has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Norman, for some time. Mrs. Mattie McKinney is visiting friends in New York City for a few days. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Fraser of Bir mingham, Ala., arrived Thursday to make their home with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Fraser. Mrs. Reid Flinchum motored to Elon College on Tuesday to enter her daughter, Miss Nelle Reid Flin chum, and Miss Betty Jo Webster as freshmen. Sgt. Frank Marley of Suffolk, Va., is spending several days with his sister Mrs. Robert L. Felton. On Thursday evening Mrs. W. D. Buffaloe, Miss Dora Leigii Flinchum, Mrs. C. C. Lingerfelt and Mrs, Reid Flinchum attended a party in Mar- ston, honoring Mrs. Hubert Latham, house-guest of Mrs. James Buffaloe. Cpl, Sidney Grier of Fort Bragg and Charlotte spent the week-end with Dr. and .Mrs. Chas. T. Grier. Mrs, Chas. T. Grier, Mrs. R. N. Page of Aberdeen, Miss Carol Graves and Mrs. Henry L. Graves of Char lotte spent Tuesday in Greensboro with Mr. and Mrs. George Graves. Mrs. J. W. Baker, John Baker and Miss Alfreda Baker motored to Elon College on Thursday, where Miss Baker enrolled. Miss Valeria Miller of Kinston is visiting her aunts, Mrs. Margaret Penn and Mrs. Lessie G. Brown, for a few davs before entering W.C'U, : N.C. ! Henry Seawell entered Moore I County Hospital Friday for treat ment. Misses Carlton Grier Frye and I Minnie Belle Frye left for Elon Col- ; lege Thursday, I Mr, and Mrs. H. L. THREE DEUCES The old pressure brought out three birdies, one for each of a threesome on the fifth, "short cut" hole at Southern Pines Country Club Tuesday. Dick Sugg, Pat Patterson and Dan Farrell were playing together and each of them holed out in deuces, one right after the oth er, on the short but tricky fifth. ABERDEEN Birth Announcement Mr, and Mrs, Norfleet Pleasants announce the arrival of a son, Fran cis Warner, on Friday, September 11th, at the Moore County Hospital. Miss Mary Johnston of Red Springs, was a guest over the week end of Miss Alice Wilder and Miss Mary Page. Mrs. C. B. Thomas of Greensboro visited friends in town last Sunday. Charles McCoogan of Dunn was a guest Sunday in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Rhyne. Mrs. Edwin McKeithen left last Friday for New London, Conn., where she will visit her son, Lieut. Misses Kathleen Rhyne, Mary Mar garet Burney and Mary Spencer Harrington left Wednesday for Wo man’s College, Greensboro. Obie Seymour of Walterboro, S. C., was in town Monday and attended the wedding of Miss Hazel Moon and Corporal Wicks. Miss Louise Caviness is leaving Sunday to resume her studies at Southern Seminary, Buena Vista, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilder left Sunday for their home in Summer ville, S. C,, after visiting relatives in town, Kelsey Norris, who is attending Polytechnic Institute in V'^irginia, is spending a few days at his home here, Mrs, Jack Smith spent the week end with Mr, Smith in Jacksonville, N, C, Dr, J. P, Bowen was called to his home in Belton, S. C., Sunday on ac count of the serious illness and death of his uncle there. Atlanta, Ga.—(Special)—A South ern Pines youth today took the first step toward winning his Navy Wings when Frederick Henry Weaver, 26, of Ridge Street, Southern Pines, N, C,, successfully completed his physi cal and mental examinations and was enlisted in the U, S, Naval Re serve for preliminary training as an Aviation Cadet, The Naval Aviation Cadet Selec tion Board here today announced that young Weaver, son of Mrs. Ada K. Weaver, will soon be ordered to one of the Navy’s new pre-flight scohols at the University of Georgia of the University of North Carolina, Primary and basic flight training will follow at one of the Naval Re serve Aviation Bases, Advanced in structions at one of the three Naval Air Stations will qualify him for his Navy Wings and a commission as a Flying Officer, Frederick Henry Weaver is a graduate of the University of North Carolina, obtaining his A, M, degree in 1937, He was active in student and fraternal activities, being a member of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Order of the Grail, On his graduation he accepted the pos ition of Assistant Dean of Students at the University of North Carolina, remaining in this capacity until Oc tober, I94I, at which time he ac cepted a position as Vice-Consul, at tached to the American Embassy at Rio de Janeiro. He was attached to this post during the conference of Foreign Ministers in January, 1941, immediately after the Jap attack on the United States. He subsequently returned to the United States via Navy and Army planes, to enlist in the Naval Air Forces. When Weaver completes the branch of training for which he has enlisted, he will be qualified for commission as an Ensign in the U. S. Naval Reserve, or as Second Lieuten ant in the U. S. Robert Smith of Camp Clai borne, La., is home on furlough and visiting relatives here and in Ral eigh.
