“I’ll try and tell you exactly
rhat happened the day ‘Mac’ and
rew went down. He was flying
s lead navigator in a formation
f B-24s that made an attack on
;angoon, Burma. The ship was
it while over the target, but
the target. When the
Duld place ‘Mac’s’ plane about
,000 feet above the ground. As
r as I know, no one saw the
ane crash, and there is a chance
at more of the men bailed out
a lower altitude, or the pilot
ight have made a forced land-
the first two men bailed
out. No one can say for certain
what happened to the ship and the
rest of the crew.
Mac’ and Lt. Robertson were
in the nose and they had a better
chance of bailing out -than any of
the other members of the crew.
I don’t want to raise false hope
for you, but I always thought they
were the first two men to bail out.
“As near as I could figure the
plane went down about 40 miles
due west of Rangoon, Burma.
“If they reached the ' ground
safely there is a good chance that
they will remain uncaptured. The
Japs only have a few troops in
this section and some of the na
tives are friendly. If they got in
with the friendly natives they
may be hiding in the hills or try
ing to make their way back to our
lines.
“All the men were equipped
with a pistol, knife, matches, med
icine, fishing equipment, canteen,
compass, and maps. All of this is
attached either to the parachute
or carried on the body. All of the
men had received detailed in
structions on how to live off the
land and to escape capture in case
they were forced down, so you
can see that they have a fair
chance to survive if they reached
the ground safe.
‘Mac’ was one of the best
friends I had in the Squadron.
The mission before he got shot
down he flew with me in a night
mission. He was Squadron Navi
gator, and I considered him the
best in the outfit. ‘Mac’ was also
one of the best liked officers in
the Squadron, among the enlist
ed men as well as the officers.”
Lt. MacPherson is the grand
son of Mrs. MacPhersos of Camer-
oh and the late Hugh P. Mac
Pherson, some of Moore County’s
best known citizens. Mr. Mac
Pherson was for years a member
of the County Board of Commis
sioners. His mother, before mar
riage, was Miss Orene Pierce of
Cameron.
