We don’t think so and that’s why we are printing the |; following tale that comes from Carthage. A good story, it tells about a bright idea that worked.) S. H- Miller, owner of the pros perous hardware store in Carth age believes in playing safe on halloween. Minctiui of the signs and portents of the times, of hoot ing owls and flittering bats, rat tling of chains and ghostly groans warning of dire things to come, Mr. Miller decided wisely to go in for a little appeasement. A few days ago passers-by were fascinated to find the three win dows of the hardware store mark ed out in neat squares, while the following notice was stuck up in the miaale one: Hey Kids! You are invited to participate' 2 in our Big Soap Contest Hallo- B ween Night. Come early in order g to get a place to draw. All chil- ft dren are invited to soap our win- if dows to their hearts’ content. § Prizes for the Best Pictures! || The children took Mr. Miller at his word and it wasn’t long be- b fore each neat little square was || spoken for, with the prospective tt artist’s name written up firmly B in the corner. 3 The results were wonderful. At least fifty children came to try out their artistic talent, using as | materials everything from water i colors and crayons to nail polisn, lip stick, tallow from candles and soap. The judges, Joe Allen, Miss Daisy Condor, and Mrs. Marga ret Willcox Wicker, were hard put to it to make their decisions. First prize was finally awarded to a colored artist, Matthew Hen derson, fourteen years old. Mat thew received $3-50 for his paint ing of Donald Duck. Second prize of $2.50 went to Gloria Parks, painter of a witch with her cat; Tom Barker received a flashlight as third prize and Joe Wallace, fourth prize winner, a pocket- knifq. Ten other prizes were giv en, the girl winners receiving fifty cent pieces and the boys boxes of bullets. The next day Doyle and Harvey Lee Miller, were smiling but sleepy-eyed. They had overheard some hoodlums say that they were going to sneak in and spoil the pictures. So, after the last artist left, around one, they settled i down on guard, deteririined that such works of art should be sav ed from the Vandals. They stay ed by the treasures all night long. The Millers, who were receiv ing the congratulations of friends next day on their imagination and public spirit, said it was the best Halloween, with the least trouble, they had ever known.
