Indians On War Path
For Tourists Scalps
The drums are quiet among
the Cherokee Indians '. . . but
they’re still after scalps, tourist
scalps. The Cherokees, long a
featured attraction for tourists in
Western North Carolina, have
decided to capitalize on the travel
trade by setting up modern tour
ist cabins. So says Joe Jennings,
acting superintendent of the
Qualia Reservation.
Last November the Indians de
cided at a tribal meeting to pro
fit from the influx of tourists
who are pouring into the little
village of Cherokee over the
Blue Ridge Parkway. They will
also produce genuine souvenirs—
baskets, pottery, and beadwork—
for sale to the visitors.
Plans are afoot to build twenty
cottages for tourists in a section
of the Indian land located adja
cent to. the Great Smoky Moun
tain National Park. The start
of actual construction work is
only awaiting Federal approval
of a $150,000.00 loan, which the
Cherokees have requested to see
them through the project.
Other tourist attractions might
eventually be made available
with the cottages, including a
dining room, tennis courts, an
archery range, and other recrea
tional facilities. Site of the de
velopment will be a short dis
tance off the main Park
thoroughfare, and an access road
is to be built leading to the cot
tages.
A great part of the construction
work is to be done by the In
dians themselves and the major
ity of building materials will be
obtained directly from the In
dian land. Bach of the twenty
cottages is to be equipped with
modern conveniences.
Carolina Motor Club officials
said the cottages would do much
to ease the shortage of tourist
accommodations prevalent at the
North Carolina entrance to the
Great Smoky Mountains Nation
al Park.
